Brother Tankred
After a very very very long gestation period (I'm talking about 15 years here), I'm finally starting on my heresy era Imperial Fists. First mini is done - as a proof of concept / recipe and to figure out what order to do things to be quicker. Also, the trim on the new MKIII is a PITA to paint. Pearson73
Excellent job, just the right level of weathering. The damage to the fist looks particularly good, any tips there? I always struggle to weather yellow without just trashing it... I sponge my weathering, but you could paint it - it's all about randomness, just sometimes you need to 'direct it'. Step 1 - sponge chip a paler shade of the armour colour, in this case a pastel yellow kind of thing - ideally this will be the 'outer edge' of the weathering. Step 2 - sponge chip a really dark brown over the top, I try and not obliterate Step 1, if you do, repeat Step 1, ideally this will leave the pale yellow at the edges, the brown being the outer edge in some areas is fine, probably even desirable. Step 3 - sponge chip a silver of your choosing, but very lightly, to show fresh damage - I use gun metal, again try and make this less than the previous Step, and inside of it, but some overlap in a few places is good. Tips- less is more, if you're doing it over a colour like yellow please be careful in case you get carried away, it's hard to get back to yellow :), so practice on something that doesn't matter so much. Good luck! Brother Tankred
A closer pic is below. To be fair I think most of the larger areas of damage were painted - I was winging it in a rush. Brother Tankred
First 5 complete, second 5 should be in a day or so, and should be slightly better - I'm using this squad to refine the technique - mainly for speed. Rayray
They look great! I’d be nervous to sponge chip my army before the main paint jobs are finished due to consistency within the army Brother Tankred 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/384857-time-to-work-on-some-fists/#findComment-6083662 Share on other sites

Brother Tankred
Second squad done, and in record time for me. I used the old MKIII helmets to see what they looked like, I don't think they really add much over the ones in the new kit (after I'd removed the spike). I do need to dial down the battle damage, but keep getting carried away ... And a few close ups. Pearson73
I really like how you've done the vexilla, the rich red complements the yellow nicely and the transfers look spot on. TheArtilleryman
Great dirty look! Very real looking and grimy. Interesting choice of positions on the bases - not seen anyone do them like that before. Cheers for the kind words, these are just the temporary bases, they're all on the edges to give better access to the trim on the mk iii, pita that it is - I'm all about speed. Surprisingly you can still see the blending through the weathering, it just doesn't show up too well with a phone camera, but I'm happy with them overall.
