Did that thing belong to the teenage mutant ninja turtles before it was a land speeder? I mean, I knew they were desperate on Istvaan but …

Well, I suppose they were kind of heros in a hard shell.........

I've kicked of the new year with a building spree, and amongst other things, I built the 3rd of those Eliminators,

large.PSX_20250119_080229.jpg.2de076bd6d

and kit-bashed myself a Primaris Ezekiel, bits from Companions, Phobos Librarian, and Stern-Vets kits,

Let's try again this year... I hope life won't kick me in the butt again with hobby time/motivation.

I, Madao, embark on the 12 Months of Hobby Challenge, and for the month of January pledge to complete Servitor, Autosavant and Tome servoskull from Imperial Agents KT (no bases though - I will make them in February, along with the remainder of the team).

The arms were... complicated. Each one is three pieces shoulder, elbow, forearms. Getting them to look right added a day to the conversion, but I'm glad I took the time.

Current progress state, while fortunately the California fires didn't threaten our home the necessary power shutoffs meant that I was without consistent lighting up until last weekend. Still fighting to get through my vow though, and I've got the first unit of thallax nearly done. Just need to do the muzzle burn on the meltas and the bases.

After some serious hesitations and a lot of doubts in relation to get any hobby related comitment for the current and next couple of months, I finally decided to embark. In the worst cqse, I might grab a stubborn badge latter this year

I, Bouargh, embark on the 12 Months of Hobby Challenge, and for the month of January pledge to complete the set of quick fit scenery from Volkus KT starter kit,  - I will paint them on sprue and avoid assembly as I still have to pack my stuff for closing move.

The pic is at it was on January 13rd, with most of stuff painted in Dic. 2024. I will resume from this point today, focussing on what is left: all metallics, floors and detailling stuff (brass pipes, skulls, screens and cogs...). 9 days to go before month end, which makes it possible but challenging since my overall booking status.

Love the “arty” style of these. Particularly like the way you’ve painted the brown satchel. Don’t know why but that just looks so realistic.

Thanks! Its my normal style of paint, wash, and hope it looks good. I think the pics I snapped here helped it out a bit, had better light than normal.

What makes it he overall style look good is that you can see brush strokes of paint but they look like they have been placed in such a precise way that nothing is out of place and it adds to that overall effect. It’s like they are stepping out of a painting.

ThePounder has a similar style which looks great on his Krieg and Kroot. When I can see my brush strokes, they just look like blobby mistakes lol

I think a lot of that is the light/camera zoom. I'm a middling painter at best, I work fast and can paint a lot in a short time, but I definitely am table-top quality. Thank you for the compliments!

Going to vow for February now, because I'm going to be busy the next week with non-board minis and I just finished priming my Feb projects.

I, Lord_Ikka, vow to paint for the month of February the following: 1 Questoris Knight, Ser Hektor, 3 Knight Armigers (one only needs basing), 2 ratlings for an Only War RPG, and four Necron characters (Szeras, Imotekh, Overlord- repaired SK model, Orikan).

January vow finished (I had some unexpected hobby time today!). Still on the painting handles - they will be based in February, along with the remaining operatives

Well....  This hasn't gone to plan at all...  Intending on bashing through a huge chunk of my back log, to then take twenty six days to paint one model...

In saying that I was trying new techniques.  Mostly focusing on my leather.  This is what I came up with:

large.HernkynYaegirsfrontafter.jpg.a13c51721de8162c5fb0e23ae7e2891e.jpg.e0bb3834daede8cb7fae132c7607bb67.jpglarge.HernkynYaegirsBackafter.jpg.a4df963d5867b3a63921b923427bf9fe.jpg.bfbe97f8693218d4359db9b50510d9c8.jpg

Not hugely keen on the blue armour or the face, but the leather and the weathering came out good.  Now... what to paint...  I've got a lot of choices.  But not much time or capability these days it seems...  Going to at least get something decent done by months end.

Had a rough month and repainted my plasma squad several times. Having one black shoulder looked good on mkVI but didn't look right on mkIII. Tried doing the trim black but then it didnt read as red enough to be White Scars. Added some random panels in red and it just kept not feeling like the right ratio. So, I gave up on the squad (for now) and just finished one so I don't fail the month. Gave up on the black shoulder and just did the Brotherhood Symbol in black and I think that works well enough to just do that going forward. The symbol itself I will probably redo when I have time though, it looks a bit sloppy to me. Might need a new symbol, since this one has been hard for me to paint

Better late than never, and as it seems that I can't paint without a deadline,

I, Bob Fossil, embark on the 12 month challenge and pledge to paint one Primaris Captain before the end of the month.

Been a struggle this month with a bunch of RL problems, so far I have gotten 2 of the terminators done and I hope I can get the last two done before the end of the month but I am not super hopeful.

What type of black were you using?

I’d expect a ruddier face in a cold environment but that’s subjectively me. I think the blue works, though I think that’s because of were the yellow gun is; maybe it won’t without contrast? The leather indeed looks great! If it’s not to much, would you share your process?

If you mean the symbol, I've done a few. That one in the picture was actually a black micron pen to draw an outline with a very careful Black Legion contrast to fill it in. I dont think I will keep trying that, and I think I will change the whole symbol because I cant get the curving consistent.

If you mean the black on the shoulder pad itself, I tried a few methods - think I ended on one thick coat of Black Legion but I tried a normal paint too (ProAcryl Coal Black or Satin Black, can't remember which)

If you are willing to experiment some more, try blue-grey black. Base layer of black, and then chunky highlight with blue-grey and highlight with a lighter blue-grey. Something like these two colors

image.png.6fdfc404afdff5925885bca70b0ae7c7.png

The coolness of the blue-grey can help make the black more cohesive with all the white and make it distinct from the gun casing. Here's an example of what I mean from Adam Troke:

The problem I was having was more that the ratio of white to red to black seemed off, and they didnt read as White Scars to me anymore. I'm not sure why exactly since I have seen others paint WS with some more black and liked it but on my own mini it just never looked right to me.
