I want to be excited but with CA's less than stellar record on QC recently I'm deeply suspicious. Also being released on consoles seems like a bad move, given how the PC version usually gets left in the dirt with multi-platform releases like this. I imagine modding will be heavily restricted, which sucks as I would only be playing if someone made a mod to replace Primaris with classic Marines.

Oh who am I kidding, I suck at Total War, there's no reason for me to even think about it.

Nice trailer though.

Very important, anyone excited about this need to slam on their brakes right now and read up on how bad Warhammer 3 is. It was non-functional for a couple of months. I don’t mean buggy I mean the AI was broken, it couldn’t move or build or engage with the game at all. This is going to be like that because they’ve rushed it to make up for their weird Hyenas 100 million dollar loss.

Kind of apples to oranges when it's a totally different engine and so on. You can question the competence of the staff behind that, but we dont know if its the same staff making the new engine, the game or anything. For all we know their greatest minds that made all the hits have been on this and that's why the rest struggled.

Looking at the very brief gameplay is even more concerning for me. The map looks very much like the Warhammer Old World maps where you have these grand structures that you cant interact with.

As far as I can see, no units are taking cover in these structures. You have a ton of units, just stood out in the open (no cover) on a big bridge. It just looks a bit like normal total war but with warhammer units.

I hope this is because it is very early, and not the direction they have gone with. You should be able to garrison buildings at the very least.

It was a pretty cool trailer, great to see it finally announced. The moment David Harbour walked in with an Inquisition Logo on the shirt it was obvious! Not sure if I've just missed them but it seems a bit strange that the trailer didn't include the Eldar too?

Some parts of this i'm not too sure on, although will obviously have to wait and see what gets revealed. The galaxy map looks great in itself, but I hope the campaign side of the game isn't completely focused around moving a ship around with planets inplace of capturing cities, but has more zoomed in locations some of the typical city-building and army movement stuff as well. Do also think it's slightly odd that it seems they're basically just done units as huge blobs stuck together without much more to them.

Great to see features like army customization too, although don't know how actual characters are going to work with that.

You’ve gotta pre order to see the extended trailer with Eldar.

The concerns about cover seem overblown; we can see units taking cover behind barricades in the in-game footage we have.  Seems like cover is possible, and previous TW games had people garrisoning buildings so I also feel like it's an unfounded concern.

The eldar were called out at the very end of the CGI part of the trailer.  Pretty common for marketing to keep some stuff for later marketing pushes.

Looking at the shot where the pods come down ~2:26, I think most of the Guard are entrenched as you can clearly see the Aegis defence lines. I'm guess that will work out to 'defensive structures' for defenders approximately like in TWW3 or Three Kingdoms, but I also wouldn't be surprised to the 'posture' settings including 'take cover' to let units dig in on ruins and craters.

In the big set piece on the bridge there are a few craters and ruins on the left side that might be defensible, but I think they're showcasing the orbital strike there more than the cover system. When I looked to the far left in that shot the orks in the back seemed like they were crossing a 'big open and empty road' section but that seems to be a big slope down rather than an open flat, which further suggests we can expect lots of 'changes in elevation' to be well worked in to the maps so they're not just flat with buildings:

large.TWW40k_bridgegrade_121225.jpg.80a8

Then looking at the bottom right strategic maps, I think the dark spaces are 'holes' or impassable gaps, not buildings... I think it's basically an elevation heatmap, if that makes sense... See image below:

A: an area surrounded on 3 sides by void in map; potentially means portions of battlefield could 'rise up' or come down from levels above/below over course of battle.

B: small high points completely surrounded by 'void'. Could be 'platforms', or garrisonable vantage points or other strategic locations.

C: Those look like the most obvious 'buildings'. Other lighter grey shadows are probably more like ruinous areas that I'd guess will give general cover kinda like forests Total War

large.TWW40k_tmap_121225.jpg.71812d2af69

In sum, I know there've been some missteps with total war over the years but I've really loved most of the time spent on those 3 games, and I'm excited for end times too. It's such a crazy endeavour in the first place that I think it's okay to give them the benefit of the doubt on this. At least if there's a gate bug in the game we'll probably just be able to nuke it from orbit. 'The Gate Bugs' is actually a great homebrew chapter name : P

Cheers,

The Good Doctor.

That unit coming down the ramp sure looks like a 'skirmish' loose formation from TW Warhammer on Ultra or something size limit.

What was that quote from Curze again?

EDIT: Come on @TheVoidDragon you can practically see the box that would have been dragged out to set them in that formation you have to admit that! :D

Trust your eyes.

@Dr. Clock Looking at that image of the bridge. It’s completely devoid of cover, with troops just standing opposite one another.

Those buildings on either side of the bridge, which should offer hard cover, look exactly like something out of the TW:W series, where they’re essentially just decorative terrain pieces with no real interaction.

Unfortunately, it all feels incredibly arcadey to me, with engagement ranges for range units looking very close.

I’d hoped gameplay to be closer to something like Steel Division 2. This, on the other hand, seems to be too similar to TW:W for my tastes. I hope I am wrong.

I will give it credit though, the scale in terms of Units looks good. Marines look few per squad where as orks look like a horde in comparison.

Pretty much where I'm at currently.

Every launch since Rome 2 (with the exception of Warhammer 1 specifically) has been a disaster. CA have proven they're masters of taking two steps back for every step forward. I doubt they'll learn anything this time around though, as 40k is an excuse to print so much money they'll not have to change tact for a very long time - short of the game actively corrupting peoples PCs.

I'm not writing it off just yet, but it certainly won't be a Day 1 purchase.

I look back fondly on Rome 2 now buuut even Rome 2 was a disaster on release - they had to re-release it as the "Emperor Edition" and despite all their work was STILL buggy (gate bug haunts us all to. this. day. (WH1-3)

The Imperial units you see on the right hand side of the picture you're saying is "devoid of cover" quite literally have barricades in front of them.  The orks are charging an entrenched position; they're gonna have to cross a no man's land to get there, that's pretty standard 40k behavior imo.

I'm not sure why you thought gameplay wouldn't be TW style from a TW game.  Feels like misplaced expectations.

Also to note some TW creators (Milkandcookies, Sotek, Lionheart) already had a chance to play the alpha build we see about 7 months ago. They also confirmed they are heavily involved in testing and the game changed a lot in 7 months

Edit2: New dev interview Link
Haven't watched it all yet but one of the comments mentioned "Buildings destructable during combat and it makes new cover for you"

r/totalwar - Hopefully the cover system is a bit more fluid and dynamic than having units just stand in an organized box somewhere in the vicinity of cover, as if they're still Empire's 18th century Line Infantry

There's a German article mentioning that planets will be divided into multiple locations, comparing continents to "old" provinces. Maybe you can see a border of a region in this shot.

I'm guessing that little console thing in the trailer shows up as your planetary map. System-wide will be a 'real-view' of the planets, then when you have forces in orbit the little screen can give you a preview of the planet.

Biggest thing I'm wondering is how they'll manage the fleet aspect of the game. We saw ships giving support to ground forces, but is there fleet combat?

Its going to be so good.

I really hope so. For all the criticism CA deserves, they have done a great job with the mechanics of many of the factions in TW: WH. Imagine a GSC faction that can invade secretly with uprisings, similar to the cults in Warhammer 3. Imperial/Chaos Knight "mercenaries" available to several factions. A Kroot subfactions of the Tau that can pick mutation paths kind of like Clan Moulder. There is so much potential there, I just want them to stick the initial landing so we get to all the good stuff down the road.

Maybe by the time they get to Admech GW will have given them more named characters to work with.

I hope Total War 40k gives us Dark Mech or some other lore faction without its own line of minis. Total War Warhammer 3 gave us Grand Cathay and that eventually led to us getting minis for Old World. I am hoping for something similar to happen.

I also hope they don't pull a Total War Warhammer 1 scenario and lock Chaos Space Marines behind a pre order bonus or day one dlc. I'm still annoyed they did that with Chaos Warriors...

Extremely unlikely. Fantasy was dead remember, TOW and timing around that is what would almost certainly have driven the development of Cathay in both lines. We don't have Kislev miniatures either.

40K is very much alive, very much the flagship, and the kits are there to be tied into. Any new factions will come with Models as well.

I enjoy seeing Ultramarines 3rd Company getting to be posterboys. Good on 'um!

(It's always a little funny, traditionally, how much the 2nd Company tends to get around in these sorts of things.)

Bad Moons over Goffs too, and Ulthwé over Biel-Tan. Guard folks: are those a special brand of Cadians?

Makes sense to a degree to use a company without a dedicated look for their captain (or in Captain Fabians case; currently missing) to show off some of the customization/upgrades in the trailer.

Theyll probably save Titus for a tie-in when SM3 eventually hits. Poor lad will be so busy.

And I do believe there was a rumor we were supposed to get Kislev mini's/expansion for TOW before Cathay, but then Russia went and did the thing and sentiment around Russian Coded Things has gone really downhill.

I don't foresee a non-Tabletop Faction to show up for at least a few years.

The aegis lines look cool but they never fixed the bug that prevents units from firing when docked. They had to do some kind of shenanigans that make the units ignore any intervening collision objects for the first few feet of the shot, and if you look at the screenshot you can see the unit behind the front aegis line is shooting right through the unit in front of it.

Who never fixed what bug? The game isn't out yet!
