edit: no Chaos at launch apparently, that sucks. Hopefully won't be waiting years for some kind of CSM to appear.

Inevitable Day-1 DLC (or "pre-order bonus") just like Warriors of Chaos were in the first Total War: Warhammer game

I won't lie, I'm a touch nervous due to the console proposition. Theres a lack of control/nuance involved in console rts games that doesn't fit with total war games. Curious how they'll do it or if the game will be forced to accommodate the controller.

They will likely have a separate team design the console UI from the ground up.  I play Stellaris on console with no problems.

I wouldn’t have bothered with this on PC but will absolutely get it for PS5.

I for one can't wait for the Leagues of Votann to be added with everyone assuming they'll sound Scottish, only for them to be revealed as having the thickest Bristolian accent you've ever heard.

Warcraft dwarves are (very badly imitated) Scottish. Warhammer dwarfs are Yorkshiremen. I'd guess Leagues will be the same as their fantasy counterpart.

This and Dawn of War IV coming out feels pretty surreal. I sort of accepted 40k RTS dying off.

My childhood is BACK. Just in time for me to become a father myself. Please Emperor give me the strength and time to play these games.

I'm being told there's no pre-order/Day 1 DLC this time around. They'll come though, that's for sure.

Edit: Scratch that "being told", it's in the FAQ in CA's own blog

Haven't LoV in trailers been voiced in a non-specific Scandinavian accent before? Or did I imagine that?

That's certainly a better fit for their naming conventions than Scottish would be, and marginally less tropey overall.

EDIT - Anyway, no point whatsoever in getting fixated on future factions, given if this plays out like the Fantasy games we could be looking at an 8 year wait and two further games for the final factions to be added.

CA will probably try and save money by getting the same voice actors back that they had for the TW:WH Dwarf factions.

That is very much an "I'll believe it when I see it" situation for me.

Edit - Dunno if just burned by prior experience here, but the confirmation of no Pre-Order DLC doesn't reassure me that Chaos will be included in the base game. If anything it makes me think they'll be held back as paid DLC.

Chaos Warriors was the launch DLC for TW:WH1 & Norsca was the launch DLC for TW:WH2 (while also weirdly being the last paid dlc for TW:WH1). Ogre Kingdoms was the launch DLC for TW:WH3. Bretonnia came quite late in TW:WH1's cycle but was free DLC. Tomb Kings were the first paid DLC for TW:WH2.

Not that it changes anything you're saying. They've done an extra faction as launch DLC (usually free with pre-orders) for all the TW:WH titles so far so it wouldn't be a surprise if they do the same again.

Thinking back, I got Bretonnia when I loaded the game up for sure... but then I must not have bought it on Day One

Good shout on these.

I'm not sure what they will do with named characters given how much they have pushed the customisation in the narrative so far. It makes very little sense for someone to be able to have guilliman or calgar leading their red and orange mcvities marines. Customisation is a new concept for TW games so really interested to see how that plays out.

It's pretty inevitable that we will see all other races added as dlc with further sub-race dlc adding more units and mechanics, but the model has worked fantastically for tw Warhammer so why wouldn't they repeat it. Ultimately if they follow the same format, they will always be added as enemies in the campaign, you will just have to pay to play them yourself, so don't buy the races you don't want

I don't know what you mean, the bright orange and black Jungle Panther chapter is lead by Marning Culgur.

I'm not overly optimistic if I'm honest. CA haven't produced the best games as of late. A lot of them are dumbed down with arcade like gameplay, and thinned down strategy. The world map too, has only got worse the longer the franchise has gone on in terms of depth of gameplay, and it wasnt like it was exactly deep to begin with.

On top of that, they are releasing on console, which will certainly mean aspects of the game will need to be dumbed down further (most likely). I fear this has been done for monetary, rather than gameplay reasons.

If I was to pick a studio to do this, I don't think it would be CA. I hope that I am very wrong though.

Pretty much where I'm at currently.

Every launch since Rome 2 (with the exception of Warhammer 1 specifically) has been a disaster. CA have proven they're masters of taking two steps back for every step forward. I doubt they'll learn anything this time around though, as 40k is an excuse to print so much money they'll not have to change tact for a very long time - short of the game actively corrupting peoples PCs.

I'm not writing it off just yet, but it certainly won't be a Day 1 purchase.

Calgar's portrait is included in the "Campaign" view in the trailer, so he (and presumably other named characters) will be there.

Maybe there's an option for each faction for a "build-your-own" legendary lord, a bit like the Daemon Prince in TW:W3, so you can make your own Chapter Master (or whatever) for your custom-painted army. That would allow that to make narrative sense while still allowing the majority of Legendary Lords to be established lore characters.

Having been a TW: WH addict for nearly a decade now, I'm cautiously excited about this. The total war engine really works well for the rank and flank system that fantasy had. The battle sizes also accomplish a sense of scale that is appropriate for fantasy.

CA obviously need to change the combat system to fit 40K, but I need to see more gameplay to make a judgment. From what I saw, it kinda looked like larger Dawn of War. The scale of the battles seemed fine, but again, I need to see more gameplay. Even if the battle scale matches TW: WH, that'd be a bit of a disappointment.

Factions may be a bit thin on launch, but with how these thing usually go with dlc we can pretty much expect every faction eventually.

Besides the factions of Space Amrines and orks already seen in the trailer, we can see Eldar and Imperial Guard on the front page of the WarCom article. But I agree, with all of the TW:WH games, it is certain that they are going to release the other factions of Warhammer40k (Tyranids, Chaos, [Dark] Eldar, ...) with further DLC's IMO.

Further DLCs and (if it does well enough) further games perhaps.

TW:WH40k might be a little more... volatile than TW:WH tho, by virtue of not being based on a game that's "complete" like WHFB is.

Very important, anyone excited about this need to slam on their brakes right now and read up on how bad Warhammer 3 is. It was non-functional for a couple of months. I don’t mean buggy I mean the AI was broken, it couldn’t move or build or engage with the game at all. This is going to be like that because they’ve rushed it to make up for their weird Hyenas 100 million dollar loss.

At the time of the reveal during the Game Awards, I was weirded out because there was just a flood of celebrities, like pro-wrestlers were there for the Street Fighter movie, Andrew Schultz seized the mic, Evanescence was performing...then David Harbour showed up.  The last season of Stranger Things just started, all his co-stars from it were on the late night shows promoting it, for a second I thought there'd be a Stranger Things game being announced, then I noticed his shirt:

He was moving, cameras were switching from full-stage to close-up, his jacket was shifting, but we all know the  =][= when we see it.  So he's in Total War:hammer 40k, but the plot thickens.  Turns out about 2 years back, his wife Lily Allen had posted him.  Implies he's a Black Templars player:

I see they've chosen the easy route. Looks like a bit upscaled Dawn of War with a one planet-one battle campaign, with no attempt at rationalizing the setting. OK, I guess. I'll wait for more ingame footage. But I will say - if this is what a city fight looks like, than it's disappointing at least in this aspect. On the other hand customization is great news, IF it applies to the campaign.

There's a German article mentioning that planets will be divided into multiple locations, comparing continents to "old" provinces. Maybe you can see a border of a region in this shot.

rfp8JQ0.png

I can see a planet being the new "province" it would be weirdly scaled I think (or the map is insanely huge) for a planet to have multiple provinces.  especially since this a new game with a new engine, they probably aren't limited to 4 regions per province anymore

I enjoy seeing Ultramarines 3rd Company getting to be posterboys. Good on 'um!

(It's always a little funny, traditionally, how much the 2nd Company tends to get around in these sorts of things.)

Bad Moons over Goffs too, and Ulthwé over Biel-Tan. Guard folks: are those a special brand of Cadians?
