                 Crimson Gryphons

The Crimson Gryphons are a Loyalist Space Marine Chapter of Primaris Marines created during the Ultima Founding (ca. 999.M41) from the genetic seed of the Imperial Fists.
Following the "Night of a Thousand Rebellions" and the rise of Hive Fleet Leviathan, they were assigned to the Alysum System in Segmentum Pacificus. Their mission: to defend against the encroaching Tyranids and suppress heresy within the sector.

Homeworld

* Crucifer: A civilized world with a heavily fortified orbital monastery built on an asteroid  ("Eye of the Gryphon") featuring powerful void shields and an armed orbital ring.
   * Akania: An agri-world vital for the sector food production.
   * The system also contains an asteroid belt with mining operations.

* Physical abnormality registered:  occasional incidence of albinism in hair follicles.

The landscape of the planet is very rugged and never becomes monotonous, standing out with high mountains and deep valleys, where different shades of green are abundant.

It has an oceanic climate with some tropical influences.

Akania

Covered in vast domed horticultural cities and water traps to capture the water needed to grow vast quantities of food.

The food produced by this planets is exported around the sector, and also used to support the Imperial Guard in their campaigns.

Separ Belt

The Belt consists of many objects varying in size and mineral wealth. Some mining colonies have been established in the Belt that double as observation posts to search the surrounding area.

Hello fraters!

With the new year starting, I have decided to embark on a new project.

This is a starting concept for the Chapter and some details might change like the colour scheme. I will try to go for a Burgundy and Silver scheme ( the contrast color is sigvald burgundy)

I decided to go for something different this time, as I tend to go for knightly chapters, instead i decided to go for a Codex Chapter. I was divided between IF and Ultras for gene seed, but for narrative purposes I do think IF fit better.

With an Ultima Founding chapter I always have a few issues expanding their lore, due to being a recent Founding, as such I'm open to feedback and suggestions :)

Hello there.

Personally, I usually associate gryphons with knightly, due to their prevalence in medieval heraldry and fantasy, so the choice of name was kinda funny to me.  Though, not wrong, to be clear; I don't think they have to be knightly just because their name might be. Also, based on the image alone, I don't really get 'Crimson' from that color.

I agree, Ultima Chapters can be challenging in this regard, but there are some things that can shape a Chapter without the need for too much time, like an influential character making swift changes or the specific purpose for their formation (which you have). Maybe a significant event in their brief history helped define their current state? I fail to come up with anything else at the moment.

Well the Burgundy Gryphons does not ring quite the same xD

"Crimson is a rich, deep red color, inclining to purple."

The color is Barak Var burgundy on impcat, but feel a little bit more to the purple side. Need to get it right. Maybe a bit more like the Word Bearers color.

As with Gryphone, I don't think the color in their name has to match their appearance, perfectly or otherwise. However, just because I was interested, I did a few mockups using the actual hex codes (before shading) for various shades of crimson I found after a search. Maybe you'll find this useful, but if not, please ignore

From left to right: 1: Quinacridone Magenta   -   2: Amaranth Purple   -   3: Burgundy   -   4: Crimson   -   5: Deep Crimson

I think 1 and 2 are very close to your images. Sigvald Burgundy is very close to 2: Amaranth Purple.

If you wanted to get closer to crimson, I guess you could start with Doomfire Magenta for 4, and then darken it as much as you'd like with thinned down darker reds or purples to get closer to 3 or 5, or just use Flesh Tearers from the start to get close enough to 5.

Fantastic, thanks! 2 is definitely what I envisioned altough a dark red like 3 and 5 also looks great.

But I'm sold on 2 to be honest. Just love the color. Also fits with the Chapter lore that I will add later.

I'm not a great painter, so I'm going to use Contrast from the get go.

Sigvald Burgundy or Flesh Tearers.

Looking back at this, it made me think.

I might use the Maltese cross as symbol. (Mostly to avoid using transfers).

Been playing with the concept and to associate it with Crucifer noble houses lore.

Also which program did you use to make those mockups?
