Captain Psycho's Blood Angels

The first time I tried collecting and painting a Blood Angels army I did not get very far (GW really killed my interest in 40K in the 2010s).  I got back into the setting when Kill Team 2021 came out and I’ve slowly been building up a 1000-point 40K Blood Angels army since. 

 

Here are pictures of my army, starting with the Warlord, a kit-bashed Captain and his bodyguard unit, a 5-model Assault Intercessor Squad.

 

 

The Captain is made of bits from the Intercessor and Assault Intercessor sprues along with a cape from the Black Templar Sword Brethren sprue.  As will become obvious, I love kit-bashing character models.

 

The entire unit is from the 3^rd company “Ironhelms” (white blood drop on the right shoulder pad).  The 3^rd company Captain’s title is the “Master of Sacrifice” – this was Captain Tycho up until 8^th edition when it became Captain Antargo.  The markings on the Captain’s shoulder pads are based on the Blood Angels heraldry in the 8^th edition codex, painted white for the 3^rd company.  The Eliminator in the picture below is not part of the army, it is from my Angels of Death kill team.

 

 

Next up is a kit-bashed Chaplain with Jump Pack and his bodyguard unit, 5 Death Company Marines with Jump Packs.  This unit of first-born models is the only unit from my first attempt at building a Blood Angels army that I’ve included in my current list.  I love the old models so I’m counting them as the new Primaris version.

 

 

The kit-bashed Chaplain was inspired by a long out-of-production metal Chaplain on foot.  The Death Company Marine on the right in the picture below has a converted eviscerator.  I lengthened the chainsword hilt to make it appear as double-handed but kept his pistol (until GW rules otherwise).

 

 

Here is the newest addition to my army, a kit-bashed Judiciar and his bodyguard unit, a 6-model Bladeguard Veteran Squad.

 

 

The Judiciar is made of bits from the Company Heroes sprue, a head from the Heavy Intercessor sprue and an hourglass bit from a Warhammer fantasy sprue.  I’m running the Judiciar for the combination of fights first, precision and devastating wounds on crits (with the Gift of Foresight enhancement that turns one hit into a crit).

 

 

The Bladeguard color scheme is based on the Joy Toy 1/18 scale model, but with the 1^st company “Archangels” white skull icon on the right shoulder pad.  For some reason the Joy Toy model has the 2^nd company yellow blood drop icon even though veterans are always in the 1^st company.   This unit would be better in an Impulsor, but I don’t have one (yet).

 

 

My other battleline unit is a 5-model Intercessor Squad.  The unit’s markings indicate it is the 1^st squad from the 3^rd company.  I recently played a game with this unit after the December 2024 dataslate update and they do some work now thanks to their new Target Elimination ability.

 

 

Here is my fire-support, a Ballistus Dreadnought.  The model’s markings indicate it is the 2^nd vehicle from the 3^rd company.

 

 

The inspiration for the company markings was the Blood Angels Dreadnought in the 2^nd edition Angels of Death codex.  The decals are from the limited-edition Blood Angels transfer sheet that GW put out years ago.  The winged blood drop bits are from the Stormraven sprue.

 

 

It’s hard to tell from these pictures, but when I airbrushed the model, I used color modulation on the panels to give the model more visual interest (at least in real-life, my phone doesn’t take very good pictures).

 

 

The final unit in the army is a 5-model Infiltrator Squad.  The unit’s markings indicate it is the 4^th squad from the 10^th company, the “Redeemers.”

 

 

That’s all for now.  I have some ideas for the next 1000 points, but Incursion size games are what I normally play so I’m not in any hurry.  Thanks for looking.
