[This post touches very lightly on real world events, but not in a political way and only to give some context to what is hopefully just a funny little story.  I checked the rules and don't think this violates them, but apologies to the mods if I am wrong!]

So, in reading 40k lore, I have always had in the back of my mind that it would be relatively simple not to fall into Chaos.  "Chaos corruption? Couldn't be me," I thought, perhaps a bit tongue-in-cheek. "Just avoid making pacts with eldritch powers, it's not that hard."  All power comes with a price, and great power will come with a great cost.  There's no such thing as a free lunch, etc.  And I know there are billions of downtrodden souls who wouldn't have the luxury of questioning where that power comes from, or inquisitors using the power of the enemy against it, and they don't have the meta knowledge that we do as readers, etc. etc.  But for whatever reason, I had in the back of my mind that I'm just built different.

But, it turns out I'm not.  In real life, I've taken an interest in UFOs/UAPs and started reading about the topic.  That led me down a rabbit hole regarding "remote viewing" -- in 40k terms, essentially psychic scrying with some potential astropathic communication mixed in.  Basically, people allegedly communicate with otherwordly/interdimensional/alien entities.  There is apparently a relatively easy to follow guide about how to start practicing it yourself, and I was reading accounts from a number people who said they had tried it and were able to manifest various boons in their lives.  Promotion at work, offer accepted on a house they wanted to buy, small monetary windfall when it was really needed, stuff like that.  And my immediate thought upon reading these accounts was, "man, these people are MORONS for not manifesting some winning lottery numbers! That's OBVIOUSLY the first thing they should do.  They're aiming way too low.  I should try it myself...worst case is that it doesn't work and I've wasted a bit of my time."

But -- as you may see coming -- my next thought was that this is exactly how someone would get corrupted by Chaos!  Using strange methods to commune with unknown, extradimensional entities for my own material gain?  That sounds like the first step on a short road to Tzeentch worship!  If this stuff really does work, wasting my time is definitely not the worst case scenario -- and I should know that because I do have the meta knowledge, accumulated from decades of sci-fi and fantasy, that greedily tapping into powers beyond your comprehension is A Bad IdeaTM.  If anyone should know better, it's me!  But I'm just like all those denizens of the 31st and 41st millenium who I was looking down my nose at :wallbash:  And I don't even have the excuse of living in squalor in a hive city...

So, in the end, I had a good chuckle at my own expense, and thought some of you may get a kick out of the story too.  Anyone else have some other unexpected, funny avenues towards Chaos corruption that they narrowly avoided?  And I have not tried remote viewing myself yet.  But if I suddenly start posting a ton of new models in my WIP thread here, maybe send the inquisition a little heads up about me...

Great story!

For me it’s all those everyone to get COVID, getting it makes you stronger! Don’t take those pesky vaccines! Oh you shouldn’t stay at home avoiding diseases, that’s how you weaken your immune system! We should all get it for herd immunity!”

Not opening a debate about it btw just having a laugh!

We’ve been invited to a “chickenpox party” for our kids on more than one occasion in the past. Always declined, but it would have been so easy. Imagine having a party in honour of spreading an illness to all your children… it all sounds so sweet and reasonable they way they put it, with cake and even a tipple for the mums and dads… but oh, there is a dark side to the PTA :p

Nurgle is waiting …

That's an interesting one because conceptually, Nurgle isn't really about disease or infection, it's about the inevitability of time, entropy and decay. As a power of chaos, Nurgle is the only one that is insurmountable because eventually, it will win. To hasten it, you just need to stop resisting

The Chaos gods are but a fragment of the powers that is located in the comments section of your favourite social media platform! Read any of those and you'll see just how easily humanity would fall to Chaos, or the genestealer cults... but not the Tau's greater good. We don't trust those guys!

You start to understand why the Imperium of the 40k universe is kept so rigidly under control, because "An open mind is like a fortress with its gates unbarred and unguarded" after all, and free will leads to trouble.

You know what, I was going to say social media. Good call. So easy to find an echo chamber that will make you think the cult has the right idea …
