I just did this last night.  It was on square base minis, but it should still work for you.

I snipped off the base rim with clippers and filed the bottom of the base smooth, then glued it onto the new base.  You can then build up around the raised area with a basing texture of your choice so it doesn't look too obvious.

Alternatively, you can keep snipping the base until it's all gone, but I was a bit too lazy for that .

Hope this helps.

Snipping of the base around the mini with huge clippers and sanding the rest off with a coarse grit or use a scroll saw to saw of the soles of the mini. Plenty of options if you don't care about the original base.

This is what I did, and it worked pretty well.

If it isn't on a tactical rock and you don't want to demolish the base, you might be able to get the edge of an exacto style hobby knife between the model and the base and then then cutting between the two - you might lose a tiny bit of the bottom of the foot, but unlikely enough to be visible.  This obviously works best if the contact area is small - doesn't really work if you are trying to remove a tactical rock, for example.

I did this recently with my lord discordant when I wanted to get at the bottom of the model mid painting, and it worked quite well as its connection points were the bottom of 6 very pointy legs.  Would be a lot harder if it had wider feet, like say a dreadnought.

I have done this before, and sometimes it worked great, but as you say it depends on the model. Doing this with Necron infantry just broke a lot of ankles, for instance, but heftier stuff worked much better. Huge contact points like rocks are not something I had to deal with as much, though.
