Wasn't sure if this quantified as off-topic or news given it's a fairly major milestone, but I'll pop it here initially.

Games Workshop officially turned fifty years-old this month, having been founded in 1975 by John Peake, Sir Ian Livingstone and Steve Jackson. Sir Ian Livingstone shared a copy of the first order the company ever received over on X / Twitter to mark the occasion.

I wouldn't be surprised if we saw some sort of anniversary thing later this year to celebrate.

Why is this so quiet? They should be celebrating a little louder, in my opinion.

Congratulations to those who founded it and a big thank you. Been a large part of my life and I look forward to many more years of enjoying what you created.

I guess GW doesn't have much motive to commemorate before-warhammer era GW.

Wonder if that shop that made the order still exists

It doesn’t sadly. There’s a fun blog post where someone’s collected adverts for a few wargaming/miniature shops from the early white dwarfs here: https://thedukemitchell.uk/tag/role-playing-games/page/2/

As far as I know, none of them are still open

If they don’t do anything for this anniversary they surely must celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the games workshop store opening in Hammersmith in 78.

Looking through that link was a blast from the past. I know when I revisited the old White Dwarf magazines I discovered there used to be a figure maker in my home town that sadly disappeared.

GW gives out £50 vouchers free for everyone in honour of their 50 years!

No? Oh that must have just been my daydream…

Me and you have very different day dreams!

For example... would it worse to be a real Space Marine: fighting xenos, purging heretics and dying a horrible, gruesome death in glorious battle. Or being a plastic Space Marine: Sitting on a shelf, unpainted and unloved, watching as new miniature after new miniature gets more love and attention each and every day....

Actually, I'll take a £50 voucher!

Asking the hard questions here!

I think the thing about this is whilst Games Workshop, the underlying company and legal entity is 50 years old, in reality they are now Warhammer - and more specifically, they are Warhammer 40k. Celebrating the age the company, whilst I do think they should mark it (making it to 50 is actually fairly impressive in the context of businesses, and continuing to grow more so) - what they really mark is the anniversaries of their brands. I know they've done 20, 25 and 30 years of Warhammer 40,000's first release - and 2027 would mark 40 years so I suspect we'll get something then.

In fact, if I were them I'd be tempted to push a new edition of 40k to 2027 just to capitalise on the "40 years of 40k" opportunity... but I also like 10th so I'm biased!

Edited for clarity.

I am quite astonished that GW did nothing yet to celebrate or communicate their 50's anniversary. I hope for a celebration Space Hulk Anniversary Edition, this would be fantastic . Well who knows, the year is still young and a lot can still happen.

As long as they wait till I've got money again  I do thInk such a thing will sadly cost an arm and a leg these days.

At 25 I got a box with limited edition Emperor's Champion, Calgar, Azrael, Dante, and Grimnar. And a second with Bile, Abaddon, Khârn, and I forget who else. Like to see something similar.

I think they cant make either of the boxsets with plastic now. When you described it my thought was immediately that the phoenix lords box was also from that era, and that they have just released enough plastic phoenix lords to fill a box after alot of people have bought them seperately  but that one was not for the 25th anniversary.

Those boxes where apparently released in June 2000.

Now makes me wonder, if those rumored ( and softconfirmed by the roadmap.) spacemarine characters will all come in a single boxset like that. FOMO will be huge.
