I haven’t seen anything about how librarians are recruited.

Are librarians drawn from aspirants who already have psychic affinity, or does the implantation of the geneseed randomly create psykers, and there’s no way of knowing who powers will manifest in?

if psychic powers manifest in a recruit before becoming a full battle brother are they immediately inducted into the librarius, or so they still train in scout squads?

IIRC Space Marine chapters get to take the second pick of any Psychically active kids picked up by the Black Ships (first pick goes to the Inquisition iirc).

Where did you see that?

I posted this generic question here because several editions of BA codexes have said something along the lines of ‘the sons of sanguinius are more likely to have psychic abilities.’

as low level as simply seeing the future, to weak psychically to be a librarian but still obviously psychically gifted.

Cypher: Lord of the Fallen has a scene where the Dark Angels recruit a freshly collected Psyker from the Astra Telepathica thanks to a longstanding pact between the organisations.

However on further inspection the usual way that Astartes recruit for the Librarius is simply that the Librarians oversee the Inductees during their initial training and if they spot any Psychic activity in an Aspirant they scoop them up and take them to the Librarius for the rest of their training.

Aspirants or recruits?

A good question. I imagine it would have to be recruits. An aspirant having psychic potential would not be enough to skip the rest of the recruitment process. They need to know he will make a good Marine.

That’s why I asked for clarification lol

The "best" answer is probably "All of the Above".   Some Chapters (For example DA who are a nomad chapter) probably get some from the Black Ships.  Some chapters probably get them locally (mostly those with a strong supply of home planet aspirants).  Some chapters probably have so much psychic DNA in their geneseed the process makes even more psykers.

I doubt they will - at best you'll get an "its different for each chapter" non-answer.  Tigurius was local to Ultramar.  DA have obviously pulled from the Black Ships - and probably found some locals like Ezekiel, who was found during a mission called for by their Librarius.  I don't see where Mephiston came from.  Njal was a tribesman of Fenris.

According to the Index Astartes article:

Quote

Those initiates displaying the required psychic talent and willpower are inducted into the Librarium, where they commence their intensive years of study and development in conjunction with the strict training of their brother Space Marines. These initiates are recruited from a variety of sources, depending on the means and position of the Space Marine home world or Chapter-Fortress. Some Chapters recruit their Librarians solely from amongst those chosen as potential Space Marines, while other Chapters select their number from amongst the most talented and disciplined of young Primaris Psykers of the Scholastica Psykana.

This basically confirms information that has been provided in previous posts.

It's important to remember, though, that simple psychic potential isn't enough to become a Librarian - an initiate must still be compatible with the gene-seed and be able to pass the (sometimes excruciating) physical, mental, and psychological processes of Adeptus Astartes induction and training.

I remember in the Blood Ravens IA article it mentions they their chapter worlds seem to have higher than normal psyker activity. I always figured that the librarian picked up any aspriant that had enough psychic potential and then if the librarius was running low on librarians then they'd turn to the black ships for some guarenteed psykers.

I'd say part of it is Imperium wide - i.e. SM get dibs over black ships.  And part of it depends on the Chapter based on how psychically active they are, how strong the aspirant is, etc.

To be fair, having the non-answer of “it’s different for each Chapter” is kinda the truth, because we’re talking about a galaxy-wide faction of radically-different cultures and scenarios. It’s the same reason there’s no single answer to “how do Space Marines do standard recruiting”. There is no one answer because you’re not asking about a singular organization.

You may as well complain that there’s no single answer to “how exactly do current-day spec ops recruit”. You’re taking a generic position and asking specific questions regarding it. It can’t be done.

The older lore was that Chapters generally identified recruits with psychic potential and funnelled them to the Librarius.

Any psykers on the black shops who were strong enough tended to be channelled to the Grey Knights if they were young enough or the Inquisition if they were older.

Carcharadons take what they get, as per that book where they are chasing Night Lords round a mine to do a Red Tithe and grab a psychic inmate. No mention of him being specifically "marine material", just a psyker.

Then there is a bit in another book - think it is the Silver Skulls ones - where there is mention that they tithe some of their psychic recruits to the Grey Knights. Implies that they must recruit their own rather than throught the Black Ships.
