Hello everyone!

Just wanted to quickly introduce myself. As you can tell from the title of this forum post I'm a big fan of Ultramarines, and before any of you call me basic, what's not to love about Romans in space?

I've been into the hobby for quite a while, mostly 30k, but never played the game so far.

I thus joined this forum for two main reasons:

1) It'd be nice to have other people to talk to and share things about Warhammer;

2) Advice on how to properly build a 30k army.

Now I'll stop writing about myself and ask y'all a question: what is your favorite Horus Heresy book and why? If you never started reading the series what's stopping you?

Welcome to the forum. :smile:

I'm afraid I've only read the first Horus Heresy book. :blush: That's not because I didn't enjoy it (I did), but it's a long series and I wanted to be able to read it semi-uninterrupted so I can enjoy it properly, and I have too many other books to read first. :facepalm:

Welcome home, Brother.

The 1 book I'd recommend to others is Know No Fear.  It happens to focus on the Ultramarines, particularly introducing Aeonid Thiel, a Marine Sergeant that started that rank's tradition of red helmets.  It's a complete, fun, interesting standalone that also makes a good starting point for HH novels, as this was the moment when the 13th Legion even realised there even WAS a Horus Heresy.

But my favourite for myself is probably Saturnine.  I'll put the thing in spoilers, it's just a funny story at the start of it:

It pretty much starts with the person who would found the early Inquisition about to commit suicide by jumping off the walls of Terra; this was during the Siege and he thought his death would free up resources for other refugees from the civil war.  Rogal Dorn, doing a morning walk/wall inspection, literally talks him off the ledge, by just starting a conversation.

Dorn reveals that for the 1st time, he wasn't sure he could win the Siege, and he's been having this weird feeling in the pit of his stomach.  The future Inquisition founder is listening to him and asks Dorn a simple thing, is he feeling fear?  Dorn is actually really pleased at the idea, like so that's what this is, this is that fear emotion that normal people talk about, what an interesting feeling, he's never felt that way before!  Then he catches himself and asks his companion not to tell Guilliman.

Dorn might not've actually felt fear, but it may have been his way to talk a person out of a suicide attempt.  You wouldn't jump off a building unless you were afraid of something even worse.  So Dorn's saying to him, it's okay to feel fear, pretending to feel it, too.  The fact that he jokes about not telling Guilliman specifically, remember Sanguinius and the Khan were defending the Palace with him, so why didn't he say don't tell them that he felt fear?  It's because this whole time they were waiting for Guilliman to get his act together and to Terra already, where he could break Horus's Siege from the rear.

In other words, Dorn's telling that death was NOT certain, in fact quite the opposite, that he WILL hold off Horus until Guilliman finally catches up, that there is NO point to kill yourself today because victory will be tomorrow.  And that's just the start of that novel, many such stories later.

Btw, having read most of the HH novels, I think there's a very legit reason not to read them.  The HH novels are like a Homeric epic of demigods fighting among men like the Trojan War.  People...even me...might prefer a historical documentary approach to 30k like in the Forgeworld Black Books by Alan Bligh, it's like watching a WWII documentary.  The novels are great for these character moments like I describe above, though.

Welcome to the B&C, fellow Ultraman.

I think my favorite HH novel is Know No Fear.
