I don’t want to go back to the old system, I definitely remember not being able to afford a basic army for years as a kid, so I understand how limiting it is for the faction.

but I do kinda have some rose tinted glasses about it, and want platoon to be more than a keyword that has limited actual effect.

so how about something like

platoon

command squad 1

infantry squad 2-4

veteran squad 0-1 (Kasrkin, or engineers)

if a platoon’s command squad has a master vox, this unit can give orders to squads in its platoon up to 24” away if that squad also has a vox

when an infantry platoon squad is within 6” of its command squad it gets +1 to leadership rolls.

command platoon

Senior officer 0-1 (castellan etc.)

command squad 1

commissar 0-1

regimental advisors 0-1

if a command squad in a command platoon has a master vox that unit can issue orders to any platoon infantry squad through the command squad’s master vox if the two command squads are within 24”

units within 6” of command platoon command squad get +1 to leadership rolls, and +1 to their melee attacks.

platoons count as 1 unit for rule of 3 or 6 purposes, but platoons are not necessary and individual squads can still be taken on their own.

various regimented infantry squads lose battleline when in a platoon, so you can have 3 platoons of each type.(Cadian, kreig, Catachan) so you can still have a buttload of infantry on the table.

So if you had a commad platoon of

1 castellan and 1 command squad with vox

and infantry platoon of 1 command squad  with vox and 4 infantry squads with vox, the castellan can issue 2 orders to any platoon squad in that platoon, the command platoon command squad can issue 1 order to any of those squads, and the infantry platoon command squad can issue 1 order to any of those squads in its platoon.

not quite the bouncing orders of 9th, but I think it makes voxes more relevant in the table and more realistic representation of what they actually are.
