While he was one of the most expectable drops its still a shame they forgot they could just retool amallyn shadowguide, like they have been doing before ( even for a more niche boardgame ) to her own sprue turning both characters into a single generic Pathfinder/Starstrider HQ profile.. while there is a lot of datasheets in the codex without that, generic characters is not one of the overavailable ones.

Rumors are he’ll reappear with corsairs and a new vyper later. I expect when it’s time to rebox the kill team corsairs.

I think we’re still seeing what went to Legends.

The rumors are for Yriel.. not illic ( who is a ranger, not a corsairs ;) )

TBF you could easily run the model as a Death Jester or even a foot Autarch if so inclined. Not surprising that he was removed if they had no intention of continuing to sell him (Finecast). After Shroudrunners released I wouldn't have been surprised to see a 'Ranger detachment' for Alaitoc, but instead we got 2 Ulthwé detachments, and upstart Yme-Loc for Grotmas...

Not a bad idea on its face, but GW kinda sucks at making good sniper characters. Illic's rules were fine in the Index though, it's true he was one of the better iterations on the sniper character theme, but that was down to him being a Leader of Snipers rather than a Lone Op, which is where snipers tend to land otherwise.

Eldar also happen to be one of those armies where we already have redundancy across multiple units such that the 'third option' will often be completely pointless or completely too powerful. Between Rangers and Scorpions that's already alot of janky Infiltrating trading and blocking potential even if you don't max it out. Adding a generic Lone Op risks making it just fundamentally too easy to carpet no man's land with random stuff before the game even starts and thus hobble alot of enemy movement and reserve strategies without trying. As an army that thrives on space primarily, there's an important balance consideration in limiting the amount of effortless skirmishing potential in the list IMO. Even just making Rangers battleline might create some nightmarish 'non-interaction' scenarios... 55 points for 5 Rangers is already amazing value, I've found, and they smash it as rear protection/scoring compliment to Scorps' 'forward disruption' antics. 120 points for 5+5 of each is just annoyingly efficient at early primary plays. They aren't going to kill much, sure, but they don't need to if they are just... alive near an objective for two or three turns. So yeah... a generic lone op would either be too cheap as a pure skirmish piece, or too expensive to be worth it in all likelihood.

I'm all in favor of an Epic Hero Leader who can turn a unit of Rangers into a cannon piece tho! Maybe one day... Until then I'm okay with Dark Reapers in that role lol

Cheers,

The Good Doctor.
