I'm new to 40k, watched gameplay of space marines 2 which led me to miniatures, which led me to the lore. now I'm creating my own chapter which i plan to paint accordingly. I'm excited, overwhelmed and lost.

Welcome!

Best place to start (at least in terms of Bolter & Chainsword) is drop by the forums for the factions you like, look at what others have to offer, share your own stuff, and ask questions about whatever interests you about your faction(s).  So, not so tough.

If one of those factions is Chaos, I'm sure I'm one of those who will be responding to your posts.  Otherwise, see you around!

If you want to have a more controlled descent into the hole, I’d suggest kill team. The starter set has a marine team with some interesting characters and some plague marines for them to fight against.

“Full” 40K requires a lot more models, terrain etc - and isn’t necessarily a better game in my opinion.

Have fun, whatever you go for.

Welcome to the B&C.

I'd echo Mandragola's suggestion of starting off with Kill Team, as it's a very good "toe dip" into the universe/game. If you wanted to go further into it, you could look at Crusade, which allows you to start off with smaller armies, and build them as you go.

Creating your own chapter is not the easiest thing to do, but it is rewarding, and you'll end up with a unique army at the end of it. Do you have a name or colour scheme for them?

For the time being, I haven't got any plans to use it in a game/tournament.

They're called "Falcons of the Void" a successor chapter of Raven Guard.

The color scheme I'm going to do is base of night blue, accented with grey and trimmed with gold.

I've already got pages of drafts, the more I researched the more detail is added.

Excellent.  Do not worry, Brother.  These are normal emotions for being in the grim darkness of the far future.

It's like traveling to a new country.  The most fun isn't visiting the famous tourist attractions; the most fun is getting lost in weird places no one else talks about.  If you ever lose the sense of being lost, it is a tragedy; it means there is nothing left there to discover.

I've been in The Hobby for more than 30 years, and I'm happy to report I still have no idea where I'm going with this.

Is it the liber sub-forum to post custom chapters?

Yes. The focus of that forum is now on development of custom Chapters (and Craftworlds, and Hive Fleets, etc.).

Welcome indeed. Good to know that you are developing your own chapter. Sounds like you have a nice colour scheme planned and have an idea for their ancestry which may well inform their fighting style.

Enjoy - don't worry about feeling overwhelmed, there are always people around who can offer advice and guidance. :)
