While in space marines we only have 1 example, there is now the Imperial guard with their command squads and this is kind of weird.

Calgar and the mentioned command squads of the Imperial Guard aren't the typical Character units as instead of being 1 model, they are a group of models as one units, with notably Calgar and the Commanders of those units being characters but the other members are just normal infantry, for all rules purpose.

So can you just allocate wounds to the character within these units outright? For the Imperial Guard, this could be annoying as giving the unit an Ogryn bodyguard does mean the officer can get a 4+ feel no pain. For Calgar, he would just have a 4+ FNP all the time. While not the most incredible thing, it is relevant and I am curious if I was wrong about a ruling during a game and it is bugging me.

For full clarity: I am not talking about ether of the mentioned units attached to anything. Just out there, on their own. Calgar and his 2 dudes, the commander and his 4 buddies (plus an Ogryn however due to how the Ogryn BG rules work, he is just treated as part of the command squad full and true, he isn't actually a leader...though does have the character rule too fyi).

So can you? Because all I can find is that you technically can, RAW. Is this something that maybe GW missed because it is so hilariously out there, who wouldn't give a unit to lead to Calgar or a command squad?

Yes, since they are not an Attached unit and have no Bodyguard models/unit.

However, keep in mind that you must allocate wounds to any models in a unit that have already lost wounds. So, in this example of Calgar and the Commander, you can absolutely allocate your wounds to them, but once they have a wound then you will have to keep allocating all future wounds to them until they are either dead or healed.

So it's not a strategy without risk. As soon as Calgar or that Commander take a wound, they have to take all the wounds.
