So..  Whilst waiting on a delivery of paints and materials so i can do bases and faces for a mix of Dark Angels and Salamanders. I decided to have a go at a Winged Tyranid Prime and the Termagaunts from my box of shane.

These are all Tyranids acquired through combat patrol magazine and  1st gen genestealers.

I feel they all need a bit of an explanation. It's taken me a while to settle on a colour pallet, scheme and technique I was comfortable with before tackling the Prime.

Started with the Genestealers who kinda resembled the box art, limited by paint and skill

Moved on to a couple of test dummies with a simple more glossy ideas.

The Hermagaunts... under coated and the two old cans on tamiya rc paint. I liked the quick results but not a fan and they will need a revisit.

Lepers... went in one direction with the blue talons then changed direction with dry and over brushing.

Prime & Termagaunts

In the end I took some inspiration from newts and crabs.

Opted on bones, wet blending yellow, orange to red, with flecks of yellow and sponged on black.  (My son suggested blue eyes... not convinced)

The Term was the tailors dummy. Enjoyed painting him in isolation so tackled the Prime in similar fashion.

Not sure I've got the focus to do the other 9 with that much care and attention.

Im still waiting on an element games delivery of paint... so i did the carapaces on the Termagaunts.

1. Batch painting is not fun

2. I suffered with what i can only describe as blending blindness.  Building up layers en masse I kept thinking they were just turning into orange blobs. (Red/green colour blindness probably doesn't help!)

3. Missed painting the legs on one of the nids, what followed was much swearing. But when I slapped on some paint I began to realise how the layering had been working to get the effect I wanted. Glad it was only a small patch.

4. Nids are too similar (in pose) to each other for my liking.  I see some kitbashing in my future.

FYI

Primed: Wraithbone rattle can.

Base: Averland Yellow

Carapace: Bad moon yellow, Magmadroth flame, Baal red. (All contrasts) .

Multiple layers and some were mixed together when wet but not all.

Black Templar dabbed on with sponge.  Very messy.

Wraithbone base  used as a quick cover up. I noted that the formula seems a little darker than the spray can. And is obviously thicker when applied by brush. Lots of thinning.

I'm still learning as I go. Happy to hear constructive feedback and technique advice.
