Popping in a separate thread for this one; the article has just gone up

Index: Chaos Daemons has been expanded to support some of the core narratives of collecting such an army and it will be where the rules for playing all of your daemons together exist. Index: Chaos Daemons will join Index: Deathwatch as a living online document usable in any game of Warhammer 40,000 – including at tournaments. We plan to continue to make updates and point changes to both forces as required.

Note that a handful of Datasheets have been removed from the Index and moved to Legends as the models are no longer in production.

I guess Karanak and the Chariots may be going OOP then?

Or being moved to AoS exclusively.

That or The Old World long term, given the long-term intent of getting to the Great War Against Chaos. They may be angling to update / replace the more miscellaneous daemons models in both 40,000 and Age of Sigmar with designs that are more fitting with those settings, with any classical named characters winding up in the Specialist Games pool.

Fairly safe to say Daemons are not getting a codex, and possibly facing the axe as a faction down the road in another edition. Possibly.

Very strange how Karanak is being discontinued, fairly new plastic model. Either not selling well, mold is broken, what gives GW?
Very sad the chariots are going too.
Things are certainly getting a shakeup.

So they have moved the out of production models to legends but have left Epidemius in. New Epidemius model confirmed?

I honestly wonder if they just forgot with Epidemus and the Blue Scribes. They have been removed in AoS... so that makes them very odd 40k exclusive daemons currently (it makes more sense with the Soul grinder, the only other 40k exclusive one.). So when exactly would they get their updated, 40k exclusive plastic kits ? we know there wont be a chaos daemons codex and its weird if they turn up in Deathguard and Thousand Sons whereas the Masque, much more active in the setting, didnt turn up in the EC codex ( although I dont necessarily believe just because something did/didnt happen in X it also wont happen in Y )

On the other hand, a Deathguard lord on palanquin is one of the few character models really lacking from deathguard, and it would make a fine candidate for a triple faction kit. ( Epidemus, Deathguard lord and Maggotkin lord.) But I dont see it happening, unless it was a miniature they had developed a while ago and just kept back for a long time.

When not seeing the Slaanesh chariot in EC, I wasnt convinced that the other codexes wont get the equivalent datasheets and it was one of the things I mentioned earlier that I think sometimes a result that is the same might have different motivations. I think of the chariot group of chaos daemons releases its the weakest one and if/when updated might be completely overhauled to the point of being a new thing, and EC codex/ Chaos daemon index are the first oppurtunities to remove it.
I still think the other codexes could very well get the non named Heralds and Chariots, and Slaanesh absence of those is simply because of the state of the miniatures.. whereas named characters is an obvious choice in itself.

Karanak is a weirder thing, in GW terms its a very new miniature, released late in 8th edition. I think here even more its a "the miniature isnt quite what we want it to be" thing. Personally I think they might update karanak to something bigger and more centrepiecey, in the least more in line with the named cavalry daemons. Doubtful it will happen for 40k though, wich is kind of a pity. if 11th edition is a 10.5 edition maybe, with an updated index, but there is clear intent that most named daemons wont go into cult codexes. I honestly and very naievely am still not convinced we are looking at a slow removal of chaos daemons as a playable army here, but rather a more convenient way to represent one of 40ks weirder armies ( as it lacks any bespoke 40k kits.) until the day that element changes.

That would make the bean-counters erupt with the power of a thousand suns. Who bought it for what system? No one knows, and we can't have that.

In the Daemonic Pacts rule, they have kept "If your Warlord is Lucius the Eternal..." rather than "If your Army Faction is Emperor's Children..."

(Meaning that Codex: EC will technically have access to all daemons, so long as Lucius isn't your Warlord. Though that's obviously unintended, and will hopefully be quickly corrected.)

They've kept it like that because as far as competitive play is concerned there is no EC codex yet, only the index. When the full EC release happens and their new points costs go from 'for use at home' to being the standard in the munitorum manual is updated, then the daemonic pacts rule will be updated to reflect that. For now the index is still around, so the rules have to reflect that.
