Finished my first 2 noise marines.

Not totally sold on the backpack brain, but those have always stymied me a little.

Also had 2 1000 point games on Sunday, against orks and necrons, using the list I posted above.  In both, it was all over before the end of turn 3, and I got swanked.

Against orks, I made an error of shooting squad of lootas that then used a stratagem to then delete my squad in response (except the attached lord) and then I failed a number of crucial charges.  Against the necrons, I suffered from my usual problem of everything just dieing from his 3 squads of 6 destroyers, combined with some poor deployment of my noise marines.  In both games, my coterie benefits never kicked in early enough to actually come to any use.

Not terribly impressed by the codex, having played it.  Noise marines are the only real highlight so far, but are very challenging to use given their absurdly short range - but if you can get them in range without having been shot up they are very powerful, especially the blast masters.  I do also think that they particularly suffer at low point levels (for example, my list didn't have any chaff to use for actions or such) and without ITC/GW style tourney terrain - we tried to do that type of layout, but my available terrain wasn't really sufficient for our needs.  Overall, my experience reinforced my prior conclusions that I think EC is the weakest of this edition's chaos codex's.

That said, the thrill seekers rule created an interesting puzzle, and I did enjoy having a maulerfiend fall back from a unit of scarabs to then charge a unit of destroyers some 18 inches behind them - which was satisfying even if ultimately to no avail in that all that happened was it killed half the squad then was finished off by the attached lord.

Thanks, @Spear of Achilles - I really liked my use of white as an accent on on my (previously EC but under the CSM codex) regular CSM, so wanted to do something similar with my EC codex EC.  And yeah, the purple is almost violently loud.

Days where I can spray are rapidly running out (I do all my spraying outdoors, and in my part of the world I have at most 1.5 months before it drops below 0 Celsius until mid-March), so despite my not having yet finished to Call to Arms vow done I thought it best to take some time to some while I still can.  Having found it a trial to get the white of the cloaks back after the purple spray (it would remain very pink, even after several coats), I decided to mask them with painters tape.  I'm also doing my demon prince in a quarter scheme, so I masked the alternate coloured portions for him too.  Here they all all taped up.

I have since sprayed the 6 noise marines and 5 of the tormentors and it worked pretty well, though there were some small portions of the armour that didn't get painted as a result of the tape that I'll need to touch up by brush when I paint the models.  Still have the prince, my Cypher standin (who needs his sleaves taped as well - missed those) and 5 more tormentors, which hopefully I can get sprayed before the weather turns... but those will probably have to wait until after Call to Arms, as I have a bunch more to paint on my vow with not much time to do so.

First time I've ever taped models to prevent overspray, and am pretty happy with the result - I didn't have any bleeding around the edges like I feared, and minimal blockage of adjascent parts I actually did want sprayed.  It was a hassle to do the taping, but less than it would have been to repaint the white, so I think it was a job worth doing.  Oh, and the tape came off very easily and cleanly, unlike the blue-tac I had used for the spray masking I did when spraying my hell drake.

Finished my first 6 noise marines (well, my first 6 of the new noise marines - I have completed 24 old noise marines).

I would say my first squad - but I messed up when I airbrushed them.  That's also why the right most one is orange - rather than airbrush the 2nd blastmaster from this squad, I painted the rightmost guy, who belongs to squad 2.  So, after call to arms is done, first thing I'll be painting is the missing blastmaster so I will have the completed squad.

For now, though, I'm working on another lord exultant and a rhino to complete my CtA vow.

Looking great, especially the cloaks!

Last month I also taped models for the first time to prevent overspray. I liked the results.

And, yes, here in western Washington (about 1,300 kilometers to your southwest), the spraying paint months are also ulimited—Aprilish to Octoberish. Although we had a lot of rain in April this year so I had to wait til May. I have come to begrudgingly accept Vallejo’s brush-on primer during the fall and winter.

Thanks, both of you.

Yeah, @Tallarn Commander I suspect I get a few weeks less of non-winter weather than you, but that you have more rainy days when it isn't winter, so it probably evens out in the end.  Myself, I tend to prime a bunch of stuff in the fall (often terrain) to work on over the winter.

I've been thinking of what detachment to run after my not so impressive showing in my games last month - at least at 1000 points, by the time I got the Coterie benefit to trigger, I basically had no models left.  Next time I play I think I'll go with Mercurial Host, instead - its detachment ability is pretty bland (reroll advance rolls) but its stratagems are pretty decent and it gives me more flexibility in how I play (plus, I don't have to worry about it killing off my warlord).

I've now finished all my CtA infantry, which let me batch base them over the weekend.  Here's a picture of them with their bases done.

First, my two Lord Exaltants - the left is a horus heresy praeter, the right is the stock GW model.  The Heresy one is new - finished him over the weekend.

The left arm of the horus one is magnetised, to allow him to swap between whip, plasma pistol and power fist.  I'm really happy with how his cape turned out.

Next are my two Lord Kakaphonists, the left one is another horus praeter (in tartoros armour, with a gun swap and the speaker form the 40K chaos vehicle accessory sprue), the right was previously a Dark Accolyte (with 2 speaker accolytes) in my CSM army, but has been rebased.

Then are my 10 infractors - front and back.

I've also finished 6 noise marines, but I got the models in my squads mixed up, so I'll post those here when I sort that out and actually complete the squad.  In the meantime, though, I should be done my rhino shortly, as I'm basically just have the hatches, weapons and some iconography left to do on that.

Yup!  And I've now finished my rhino.

And all of it together.

Next, after I take a break by doing some terrain, I have another unit of noise marines, 2 5x tormentors, a prince with wings and a two pistol guy I can use as a exultant or kakaphonist.  After that, I'll need to build stuff - I currently have a combat patrol box, but wouldn't mind picking up 6 more noise marines and GW's actual kakaphonist model if it ever decides to get those back in stock.

Oh, and my rhino really emphasized that I need to work out how to highlight the purple, to make the rhino a but less of an obnoxiously purple box.

And for those who are curious, here is my new rhino next to my old(er) CSM one - for now, like things like my maulerfiends, I'm going to continue borrowing the CSM to use in my EC.
