Howdy one and all and welcome to my WIP thread for my Luna Wolves.

Since I read Galaxy in Flames many moons ago (well over 100 moons now), the Luna Wolves have been my favourite legion.

One thing that was never mentioned was any detachments of the 16th but as with the rest of the legions there must have been detachments dotted around the galaxy.

My 14th Company are one of these detachments. In the early stages of the Great Crusade they were responsible for one of the few operational mistakes of the legion and are essentially exiled from the main body with the remit to rebuild the company.

The goal is to build a fully mechanised army. I'd love to be able to make a full Regiment, but I think that the stretch goal will be a mechanised company with an Armoured and Support Company to back them up. For now I’ll be focussing on a platoon at a time to keep the same integrated feel but on a more macro scale.

I had to be in Nottingham last month for a fitness test and may or may not have had a Knight-related moment of weakness. It’s pretty much built now, I need to file off a little bit more of the trim and decide on a scheme and we’re good to go.

A new army is always exciting! Looking forward to seeing your finished models. Great pose on the knight!

Thanks, this one has been brewing for over a decade so it's nice to finally work on it!

So I've been building away, and I've got my first tactical squad built. I'll be the first to admit that I know nothing about the rules and the odds of me playing a game are pretty low too so I'm just going with what I want for the most part. I'm also using Primaris models as the proportions are so much nicer, and if I end up adding Imperial Army elements the differences in height and bulk are more distinct.

This squad is also the one that's becoming the test dummy for bolter configurations, ranging from just trimming the scopes down, thinning the tops up to making it a full rifle. I have also greenstuffed them so the plates are MkIV or my own Voltoris Forge World pattern (Heavy Bolter has this).

Just a little bit of progress this week. Hopefully I’ll be able to break the brushes out some time in April!

I’ve made up a few more marines:

- Vexilla for the platoon command squad

- generic marine

- Beginnings of a Librarian (I know, Heresy!)

- Cataphractii

So as I committed to using primaris marines over the classic tactical marines, the lovely box of Cataphractii that my wife got me for Xmas look very anaemic and are significantly smaller than their power armoured brothers. In terms of bulk they’re virtually identical to the power armour too so they’ve all going to a very reputable orthopaedic surgeon and the body and fender shop to get bulked up appropriately.

I’ll see if I can source a regular sized Terminator vs my biggerised ones tonight for reference.

As ever, any thoughts/suggestions appreciated :)

After a few weeks of building and whatnot I’ve knocked up some test models. I watched Trovarion’s grim dark style on YouTube but couldn’t make it work for me. (Vexilla and Sergeant) As I’m typing I just thought that maybe if I started with a grey base it might not look quite so stark. I shall ponder this.

For my other style I’ve airbrushed dark grey down to USAF grey as the final shade. Pin washed and some stippled chips and I’ve run it over a light winter grime wash which gives it that slightly greenish hue. final step was dry brushing a bit of silver over the whole model to give it a bit of a metallic sheen and (hopefully) suggest lots of little flecks that show the base metal through the paint. The black still needs a bit of love and the squad/platoon/company markings need to be done.

any feedback or suggestions appreciated, I think I prefer the second style but I need to bring it to life a bit more, it’s still a wip at the moment. Also he dropped his melts bomb which was a bit silly of him.

Interesting idea for a project. Lunar Wolves are rarely seen as models being worked on, although they have left their mark on the history of both the Crusade and the subsequent Age of Darkness. Certainly not all loyalists died on Istvan III, the galaxy is large and an event such as the Crusade could inevitably leave such small loylists fragments. I wish you endless inspiration as you work on them and the next models.

@Straidex It’s a shame, but other than the first 2-3 books they don’t really have a back story before they morph so I think it gives quite a lot of creative freedom when it comes to a backstory - as long as you’re not bringing Loken Et al to the table.

My Luna Wolves were a chapter essentially exiled from the main body very early in the crusade and rebuilt alone, in their own image so when the heresy happens they’re be on the other side of the galaxy, doing their own thing without strong ties to the Imperium or Horus.

Not sure how sad it is, but I have a vast word document with their history through the crusade.

@Firedrake CordovaI’ve gone for a half way house between the two. I like the colour and texture of #2, it looks how I feel it should look, but I agree it was a bit flat.

These are just off my iPhone but I’m reasonably happy with how he’s come out. I need to work out how to weather the black better and buy some more paints to make the lenses pop a little bit more and the knew/back pack logo.

i probably shouldn’t have spent all that effort sculpting a MkIV plate only to chuck pouches over it either but there we are…he also found his melts bomb, which was clever of him.

I have 2.5 Contemptors (the Calth one only counts as ½ until I can put some serious time in to re pose) who are going to form the fire base of my drop pod units.

This is the plastic kit - Xmas present - pre weathering and details. He’s going to be relatively simple as a younger dreadnought, I’ve got a FW relic who’s going to be the lead.

I’m going to try and do a freehand parachute symbol to represent him being a drop trooper in his previous life and a couple of unit markings but that’ll be it.

Howdy one and all.

I’ve been at the in-laws for a few weeks so I’ve been without paint so I’ve not made any progress on the Contemptor. I have made some pretty good progress on my First Platoon’s CQB squad.

The Sergeant with his double power fists is going to have lightning claws when I dig the claw parts out, they’re in a box in a particularly buried part of the loft right now.

I don’t usually go in for helmetless marines but I quite like the respirator one.

My big conundrum right now is whether to make the MkIII marine into a sergeant for another squad as I’ve ended up putting so much GS into him so far.
