Saw this floating around. Looks better.

Yeah, the default TS paint scheme make those look a lot better and I wonder why the hell they went with the one in the Preview.
However those models still have 3 big design flaws:

  • Silly robot heads that make them look like they're Ironkin cosplaying as TS with Stargate Jaffa helmets
  • very rigid poses
  • Chaos decoration obstructing gun barrels

The thing that gets me about the TS robots is how small they are; they're barely bigger than Scarab Terminators and have roughly the same style of armament, which does leave them feeling kinda redundant?

WE Slaughterbound or whatever his name is, meh. Very underwhelming. DG guy is very cool but we've already seen him.

Slaughterbound is noticeably chunkier, but not so much to make kitbashing your own unfeasible.

Sekhetar are quite lanky, and tall enough to enable them to shoot in between all the headgear.

Overall not too shabby, though I'll probably skip the big boxes.

I like the idea of the TS Sekhetar robots, but I don't think the paint job has done them any favours, and makes them look worse than they actually are.  Thousand Sons have been my 3rd faction since the converted Chaos Terminator back in ye olden days (hence the general look of my chapter), but the robots seem to have missed the mark.  They look very unstable, and I'd be tempted to swap those weapon arms with either HH Dreadnought ones, or use spare upper arms to reposition the weapons so they're essentially the lower arm.  Personally, I like the look of @TheMawr's Photoshop efforts to make them look more like Ushabtis.  It's a shame they didn't lean into that and carry over some of the design cues of the Castellax, with weapons embedded in forearms or shoulder-mounted.  I might pick up a box for a project, but I think I'd have to do some conversion work on them if I do.

I was confused by the size of these robots. I expected something bigger. And then I realized their analog. Bigger than terminators, smaller than a helbrute. Loaded up with ranged weapons and some powerfists thrown in. Squad size of two. They're Thousand Sons Obliterators.

Their given lore is that they are hidden with magic and wait in advantageous positions until opening fire at the opportune moment. I'm willing to bet this will translate to a deep-strike ability flavored as "We've been here the whole time."

So this, but instead of giving you a scare they set you on fire.

Could the Birdbots be a one off sculpt?

As I understand the team design and make minis, then eventually the rules guys make rules for them.

These were likely not developed to supplement TS and fill a hole, rather someone made a "cool" mini and we happened get rules for it.

Do we know who designed and sculpted them?

There was a British Officer named Alfred Wintle who once ordered one of his troops to "stop dying at once, and get a haircut".

The soldier lived to be 91.

I've not heard of him before but I was thinking along the similar lines, I was remembering playing Gears of War and musing how if you get filled with bullets you can just help them stand up to get into combat again. "stop bleeding, you cowards!"

So as a baby World Eater grows up he gets bigger, angrier, and more naked? I can't wait for the Imperial Knight sized Berzerker in speedos with spittle flying out of his mouth...

Depends on how many daemons we can stuff into it before it bursts at the seams. Also Kytan is basically a knight sized berzerker that can be assembled with a fleshy head that may or may not produce spittle.

Demon possession as a skill check has lots of instances in the lore, so it's not that out of scope of the realm but it definitely feels like "Oh yeah?  Well these guys have been possessed SO MUCH MORE AND THAT MEANS THEY ARE COOLER." Which is like, 12 year old brain levels of logic.

I agree is shouldn't matter the quantity of the possession but the quality of the spirit doing the possessing. Minor daemons vs a greater should provide cool vectors for lore and crunch.

It's likely they will give us more insight into the design ideas during the week before their release, like they did for Fulgrim and the E.C. recently. Can't wait

They haven't done much re: fulgrim on design explanation? Unless I've missed it?
