We still havent seen anything that fits this rumour yet have we? It looks too much like a frost cannon to me.

I think we have seen all the new forthcoming models now and I don't think there are any Frost weapons in there. I concur it is for another faction.

Saga of the Beastslayer looks strong so far:

  • Basic Mode - Lethal Hits vs Characters, Monsters and Vehicles
  • Saga Complete - Lethal Hits against all targets

Now what is not clear is whether this just just in melee or all attacks. The WarComm article does not mention a restriction but having it active for shooting as well would be amazing. If it is in melee only then that would be slightly disappointing as it is in fact a weaker version of the existing Index version of Saga of the Beastslayer. We also have the following confirmed:

Enhancements

  • Helm of the Beastslayer - Reduce AP of incoming attacks from Vehicles/Monsters by 1.
  • Braggart’s Steel - Increased Strength. Increased Damage once the Character completes a Boast

Stratagems

Sage of the Bold

  • Inspiring Presence - 1CP Gives unit Lethal Hits (in melee?)
  • Heroic Resolve - 2CP -1 Damage on incoming attacks (lets our Wolfguard cosplay as Deathwing Knights )
  • Countercharge - 2CP Character unit can charge at the end of the enemy Charge phase.
  • Alpha Strike - ?CP Advance + Charge for a Character unit.

Saga of the Beastslayer

  • Unbridled Ferocity - 1CP +1 to Wound in melee
  • Coordinated Strike - ?CP Unit near board edge goes back into Strategic Reserves
  • Impetuosity - ?CP Unit of Blood Claws or Wulfen get some sort of move (maybe even Charge) when they get shot
  • Thunderous Pursuit - ?CP Reaction move if an enemy unit tries to move away

seriously though, sorry for the outburst. people have been sharpening their knives with the misplaced anticipation that my faves the thunderwolves cavalry were going to get squatted and I'm just tired of it. Not just "I think these will go away," but "I HOPE THEY GO AWAY BECAUSE I HATE THEM AND THEY'RE STUPID!" and its always irksome. they've always been pretty popular kit in Space Wolves spaces and you don't always see that with folks in general discussion areas. i'm going to keep buying them because i love them and eff you.

I love Thunder wolf cavalry.  They are the most space wolfish thing you can get.  Wolves riding wolves. Awesome.  Even before they were introduced i wished GW had them when i started playing in 3rd edition.  My only gripe with them was the actual models games workshop put out for them, wolves should have been bigger.  I preferred the look of the original wolves from fantasy that the goblins used to ride,   The newer slimmer looking wolves that we had for the fenrision wolves for space wolves were meh in my opinion.  Dont get me started on Canis.  Excellent model for Canis but the giant rat was to much.

I want GW to just update and upscale the thunderwolf cavalry.  The new wolves with Grimnar are great looking models and if they could enlarge them that would be amazing.

Article makes a lot of hay for a detachment with anti-synergy.  Lethal hits for the unit with Dev Wounds.  Sustained hits from the WGBL is really what you want - though I can't get over the idea of babysitting a Predator Annihilator with an Iron Priest and giving all 3 lascannons rapid fire 1.  Saga of the Bold also synergizes well with a Pred Annihilator, making it less reliant on OoM for reroll support and helping put it up on par with the Lancer's native rerolls.

Overall, though, I'm happy with the way it's looking.  One of my big concerns was a lack of strength on the WGT with only power weapons - a strat to give +1 on the wound roll does a lot to mitigate that.  Them also having a durability buff in their unit rules means they've got the potential to actually be good like Deathwing Knights.

I'm hoping that, without Long Fangs, in our codex, we'll get access to Devastators.  If not, I've got a couple units I just can't use.

On the whole, I think things are looking up.  A lot of what they made Space Wolves in this edition feels like what I like to play - big blobs of infantry, badass characters, and some solid support fire from tanks.

Do I understand it correctly, that there are absolutely no unit restrictions on what can be taken from main codex, so SW chaplains and apothecaries are allowed?

Unless they remove it restriction in C:SM would still stand, which means we have no first born heavy weapon units.

the whole codex has been leaked on Reddit. Pics are in good quality.

My takeaways from this:

No AoC for us.  Nothing I can see in there about what units we can or cannot take from Codex: Space Marines.  I think we have full access to CSM.  Maybe.

WGBL is busted and will be nerfed.  Captain stats, fight on death 2+, sustained hits 1 and reroll 1s to hit against units within 6 inches for his unit for Lt points.

WGT have all the tools needed to be a real beast on the tabletop, especially in SotBold.  2+/4++ with 4 wounds (with SS), -1 to be wounded, a stratagem for -1 damage till end of phase, and strats for reroll hits and Lethal Hits.  That's a hefty CP investment to get all that but damn they could do some work.

Iron Priests are funny and I don't know the rules interaction between Hunter Killer Missiles and Rapid Fire but I suspect it needs an FAQ.

Saga of the Hunter looks like it is the easiest to complete and there's very little your opponent can do to stop you from completing it (aside from killing you/not dying).  Saga of the Bold (SotB) looks complete-able on turn 2 fairly regularly if you try.  Saga of the Beastslayer (SotBS) seems like it gives oppo the most chances to keep you from completing your saga and forcing you to play without a detachment rule/is the most highly variable based on what army you're fighting.

SotB seems like it'll be what you see most often.  Personally, I like that it encourages building closer to our old Retinues rules (1 HQ choice per 750 points instead of 1-2 HQs).  Enhancements in here are also spicy.  2+ resurrect, CP gain on boast completion (this is like a guaranteed 6 CP - unlike the Saga that requires completion of 3 separate boasts, Skjald enhancement triggers each time a boast is completed - IE, each time your oath target dies.  you are killing your OoM target every turn, right?).

Headtakers Hunting Wolves are 20 points for 3 10" move chaff.  They're OC1 within 6 inches of a character.  20 points for move blockers/action monkeys is a pretty good deal.

Where's the restriction in C:SM?

It's in the FAQ - so it may get removed.  Maybe not.
