stev
Hi all, my boys (10, 9, 8) have recently gotten into warhammer 40k and we are enjoying talking about the setting, modelling, painting and playing. I haven't really seriously played since 4th or 5th edition. I think I have my head around the basic rules. Some things have changed more than others. The boys keeping asking me for advice etc. So I though I would come here to get more accurate opinions. Specifically, what should they each get to make a 1k point force. Boy 1 is Orks He has the beast boys combat patrol box and a pain boss. Oh and last xmas' red gobbo. I reckon 510 points. Boy 2 is dark angels He has the spacemarine half of leviathan ultimate box, a redemptor dreadnought and a firestrike servo turret. About 715 points Boy 3 is chaos space marines (he wants to go down a more renegade route rather than focus on gods/daemons etc) He has a terminator Lord, terminator squad and 2 5 man legionnaires, one squad armed for melee, the other ranged. 520 points. Obviously we're not going for competitive list, my goal would be to keep things fair and balanced as possible so everyone has fun. The other consideration is cost, so like trying to get to 1000 points as cheaply as possible Any advice is appreciated! Dr_Ruminahui
First of all, welcome to you and your children to the hobby! I think its great that you and your kids can play together. I think you would be better off asking the same question in each of the related forums - so the question about orks in the orks forum, dark angels in the dark angels forum, and the chaos space marines one in the heretic astartes forum. That way you can get your questions before the eyes of folks with the knowledge to give you the best advice. That said, to allow people to give suggestions towards ballancing the 3 forces against each other, I'm going to toss this over to Amicus - the Tactica forum is kind of a disused and dusty portion of B&C, while Amicus is much more active and there should be plenty of people eager to give advice there. MadGamerAK
So, If you worried about cost, be sure to check Ebay, a lot. They can have some cheap deals, amazon has stuff go on sale. I am don't play any of those armies, so I'll recommend what @Dr_Ruminahui said. Thats where you'll get a lot of info about each of those armies. I know I have gotten a lot of advice about my army including painting tips. stev 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/385584-advice-for-my-kids-armies/#findComment-6102534 Share on other sites
gaurdian31
For CSM I would go with normal foot Chaos Lord, the Lord in Terminator Armor, Master of Executions, Terminator Squad, Legionaries Squad 1 and Squad 2, a 10 man cultist squad, Chaos Havocs, and 2 Chaos Rhinos. That's 950 points, leaving you with 50 points for enhancements from whichever detachment you choose or if you don't want those you can do another 10 man cultist squad if you don't want to deal with enhancements. For Dark Angels you could add an 5 man Intercessor squad and Deathwing Terminator squad and have 25 points for enhancements. Not sure about the Orks. stev 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/385584-advice-for-my-kids-armies/#findComment-6102539 Share on other sites
TheArtilleryman
It might be a good idea to subscribe to Combat Patrol from issue 30-50, cause you’ll get a whole patrol each of CSM and Orks, plus a bunch of paints, which will take you to over 1000pts each. For the marines, maybe some battleline and/or close combat squads? The Leviathan box is all elites, so maybe some assault intercessors? They can be picked up on eBay dirt cheap even new on sprue. Or the DA Combat patrol has a nice bunch of units you could add too with the intercessors, hellblasters and bladeguard. stev, Karhedron and N1SB 2 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/385584-advice-for-my-kids-armies/#findComment-6102561 Share on other sites

I though it was a subscription based thing? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/385584-advice-for-my-kids-armies/#findComment-6102621 Share on other sites
Cleon
Assuming you are UK based you can try and pick up individual issues from the forbidden planet website, although shipping has really started to bite on that. Newsstand also offer the ability to subscribe from a future issue (although only a few in advance. There's a whole load of info in the thread on the news forum here: stev 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/385584-advice-for-my-kids-armies/#findComment-6102660 Share on other sites

You can buy individual issues but you can also start your subscription from partway through if you want a particular faction then cancel before you’re done. 30-40ish is going CSM and 40-50ish is going to be Orks. JeffJedi
Killa Kanz for the Orks, they are fun and will mess up a space marine in combat. Dark Angels, I'd pick plasma Inceptors for speed and hitting power. LameBeard
The most important advice for kids’ armies is “try not to take over!” - advice I struggle to stick to myself. You just gotta let them make their own bad decisions, they will still appreciate that more than having something forced on them. If they do choose something that’s weak in the current edition, I would just house rule it’s (say) 50 points extra for the loser to spend next battle. You keep going until you find your own balance. but yeah, Killa Kans, obvs. stev 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/385584-advice-for-my-kids-armies/#findComment-6102769 Share on other sites
