The next issue of White Dwarf is turning the excess dial up as far as it will go – and then some. There a feature on the design and painting of Fulgrim, the Daemon Primarch of Slaanesh, a hefty dose of narrative, tips on painting the Emperor’s Children quickly and effectively, rules for a Combat Patrol that mixes daemons and Space Marines, plus Boarding Actions rules and a battle report. Alongside that, there’s the second part of our Aeldari design focus, more news from the Mortal Realms in Flashpoint Gnashka, and plenty more from the Bunker and beyond.

First raft of extra rules for Emperor's Children this issue, plus some painting guides.

Boarding Actions are great, because when you've only got 500 points, you don't see the impact of a small range.

It's been a while since we've had Crusade content in a Dwarf, and so far this edition, they've been good about that (new content for Sisters, Kroot, and GSC). I was hoping to see a Path of the Outcast for Eldar. Even extra content for EC to fit the theme- their Crusade rules focus almost exclusively on making combat drugs, so they lack an overall directional focus. I'm not sure what that might be, but I think its good for the game if every faction has one.

New combat patrol mixing daemons and marines could be interesting. Odd they didn't say which faction, but I assume regular CSM.

considering the commas I assume its all emperors children ( also the boarding patrol rules wich they dont have yet.)

edit :

Actually the cover downright says so.

Ah, so it does. Thanks for pointing that out :) That's very quick for EC to get a second combat patrol, but ok.

This is an important note:

WHITE DWARF IS AMAZING NOWADAYS

I bought Issue 509 for the Imperial and Chaos Armiger Combat Patrol rules.  Then I saw all these Vehicle conversions, and I was like "oh this is some weird hot rod car conversion thing," then I realised there was a 2-page spread of rules for a car racing game...that's what the conversions were for.  Then this whole section for Krieg.

White Dwarf has not been this good since like, the '90s, back when they'd print actual rules and had cardboard terrain for Necromunda and stuff.

I mean mixing Daemons and Space Marines...in Combat Patrol.  Lots of new players, they're all starting with Combat Patrol.  It might be time.

i've picked up a few since getting back into stuff the last few years, and the content has always seemed great - big issue for me is that i'm playing less than half the systems, and generally £7 is far too much for the two or three articles I want to read, even if they look fantastic.

do they still do an archive for w+ subscribers? how up to date is it?

also a bit of a pet peeve but i don't like that they've started using models for covers. was always a good source of full page artwork.

They don't archive much to Warhammer Vault these days unfortunately (only six issues and a book excerpt have been added since 2023), so the current latest White Dwarf available on there is Issue 491 Aug 2023.

They also rip any rules content out as soon as the edition changes, which is why even at its best, of always regarded the Vault as sub-par, if not totally useless.

Hard disagree. The old imperial armour books had awesome fluff in there so although the rules are removed. Plenty of good reading to be had there.

Yeah, you know I hadn't been thinking of them- only the Dwarfs.

People often talk about how good they were, and I've never read one since they always cost FW$ and can't be impulse purchased locally. I should probably check them out. It might be different for me since I care so little about Space Marines.

For a guy who likes Sisters/ Inquisition vs. GSC or Drukhari, which one is best to start with? (I also really like Kroot, but I would really want rules content for them too... Heck, who am I kidding- I want rules for it all, that's my problem).

This is blatant misinformation, as numerous WDs from 8e and 9e still have rules content in them.

And even were that the case, as @01RTB01 pointed out, the easy access library for fluff / lore is a great part of Vault. If we're fortunate they'll try adding some of the older, out of print Black Library novels in the future.

My apologies; when the vault debuted during the 8th (I think) edition, the rules content for all previous editions (7th and lower) had been scrubbed. Seeing that, I mostly ignored the vault from that point forward, and just assumed they had maintained the practice. My mistake, and I'm happy to be corrected. The 9th edition Crusade rules for Torchbearer Fleets and Armies of Faith is some of my favourite WD content ever. It makes me happy to know that people still have access even if they weren't fortunate enough to pick up paper copies.

While I certainly appreciate the value of well written lore, my personal preference always skews to actual game content; I'm more motivated to read lore when I know there are mechanisms to help me represent that on the table. But again, that's my personal preference, not an inherent problem with Lore-only content.

I'm hoping they will be updating it regularly now - like you mentioned, there was a long time with essentially nothing added, but I would guess they thought they had added too much too soon before that. Soon after Warhammer+ first launched, White Dwarf issues were usually available to view in the Vault only around 3-4 months after their initial availability (I think). I imagine that impacted sales - at least, I was not motivated to buy it when it was going to be online soon after, unless the card inserts were interesting.

Although they haven't announced anything, it's beginning to look they might now be back on a regular release cycle for White Dwarf on the Valut, but about 19-20 months behind the initial release of the magazine. I suppose they find that a better balance, in terms of making the Vault useful while still giving readers a reason to buy the magazine if they don't want a really long wait.

To be honest they created a problem that didn't need to exist. Restoring and publishing old White Dwarfs was a much more interesting proposition. Abridged rulebooks of the past was a more debatable offer (altho lore in a non-blurry scan state is always welcome), but still an interesting projects.

They really didn't need to make the vault a "last year's white dwarf" repository.

I definitely agree with that! I was surprised when they first started to put more recent White Dwarf issues in there. I had hoped we would get more old Codex books and even lore from the main rulebooks to see how it has changed through the editions, but perhaps they think that would impact sales of the latest versions.

I think I read somewhere once that there was a limit to how far back they could go with making White Dwarf available digitally for copyright reasons - I think the idea was that contracts with writers had not made it clear who owned the copyright to a digital release in the earlier days...I'm not sure if that situation would have persisted right up until 2003 though, which is the earliest White Dwarf on the Vault. Does anybody else remember hearing like this? Perhaps I'm confusing it with some thing else.

I suppose software might be an issue for releases that far back too - e.g. they might not even have the files any more, or they could be incompatible with the software they use now.
