What have they done to my boy...

Strong dislike for me. The drop pod was basically perfect before and now it's just a piece of ETB terrain. Hopefully the true drop pod will live on in HH.

OK, I guess? I was never particularly fussed about drop pods on the table top so the change in design doesn't mean much to me, seems a shame to lose the opening doors though. Really have to question if this was a great use of the studio's time though, even within the Space Marine line I'm sure there's other kits people would appreciate more. Maybe this just makes for a good 'filler' update and they want to save things like Captains on Bikes or Vanguard Veterans for a bigger, fancier release.

A big no from me. While I had some issues with the old doors not locking it properly, their movability was for me an important part of the vehicle feel, so to say. Not to mention the modelling experience. Besides, the harness is now modeled in the open position as one, ugly solid block with the inner "walls" - another modelling and aesthetic downgrade. Just look at it. Something like that in this scale?!?!? But hey, it's better that they removed the storm bolter completely rather than exchanged it for a heavy stubber.

Fingers crossed that it comes with a new variant or a Command vehicle option, I doubt they will change the design much if at all.

There are a bunch of variants that were either Kitbashes or FW that could make an appearance.

I always liked the Prometheus (quad Heavy Bolters on the sponsons).

Well I just went and bought 3 of the current model.

I was always intending to get another 3 at some point, so every squad in my Blood Angels company could have a drop pod. I’d be livid if I had 5 of the old ones and 3 of the new ones, so thanks for making me drop an unexpected £90 I guess?

It's quite remarkable how GW manages to fumble insanely simple Space Marine releases like this. Really disappointed by them removing even more things like the deathwind variant and the storm bolter.

Kind of.

I would argue that the original model hasn't properly worked in the rules for a long time.

I made a comment a while back that the model would be best as a scenic piece.

It looks as though this is something in the middle. I just hope the rules are good and not simply functional.

Not a fan this funnily enough.
The doors being locked open is strange, they’re gonna be a pain in the ass to transport around.

I had 14 of them back in 7th when playing Ragnar Blackmanes company and all squads could take a pod for free. It would’ve been even more of a pain to transport then if I couldn’t close the doors to pack them away.

I never had an issue with the kits. They all built really well and the doors all clicked closed nicely. I’ve never understood what people are moaning about with the old kits.

I really don’t see the point in this update, but never mind.

I built mine a long time ago but I have the distinct impression that the kit included unnecessary build points. Individual harnesses mutli piece doors instead of one piece, some parts that could come together to make one piece as you put other similar bits together instead of building that piece with many parts.

In terms of the doors, I'm not fussed, although I did like the option to deploy, not deploy. Not a deal breaker. Carry footprint is a strong consideration though. Would have been nice if the doors could come off.

I don't think the drop pod should be a piece of terrain right out of the box. It's an arguably worse drop pod with less proper detail and less options, but it is quite funny that they managed to figure out a way to include a heroic rock in a vehicle kit.

Yeah, that's pretty weak. An outright downgrade of a model with more simplistic details and less options. And I won't be surprised if the base of the model is hollowed out too. But hey, you get two of them now...yay?

At the very least it's not a Primaris Thunderbum Deployificator.

It feels like this has changed the model from a vehicle type model to a terrain piece.

I’m not a fan of the doors being fixed open, feels like they could’ve just written the rule to completely ignore the doors for any and all rules purposes to avoid shenanigans.

Ah but then they can't invalidate your old pods can they?

I really don't get why they did this, the old pod was fine, slightly awkward to build but so are most vehicle kits, but without w weapon it's literally terrain. And what was the issue with rules? I never had anyone say anything other than you measure from the transport compartment, and if it really was an issue then just add that to the rules like they are anyway.

The doors being fixed open just makes this wildly impractical, they will be a bugger to transport and it massively restricts where you can place them on the board because you can't now close doors to fit them between terrain pieces (and before anyone says that's not realistic because then they wouldn't be able to get out, yes but it's also not realistic that a 20 tonne bullet fired from space wouldn't demolish every building within 50m on landing anyway...)

Just a total fail, hopefully this doesn't set the tone for the new release which is clearly going to have a new lr. Fingers crossed they don't replace the sponsors with autoguns and the heavy bolters with a smoke launcher

"Distances must be measured from the center of the drop pod model, not the edge."

There, I saved you years in R&D.

I also missed the point in the hobby where the original plastic kits came out, so I might also try and grab an old one, too.

The original model never worked in the rules. But that's because GW rules designers are bad, not because of the model. Downgrading a model because the designers can't write simple rules is not an improvement.

Same. Gotta have a few for my ever growing pile of shame. My imaginary future alt-hist-non-primaris reunited Ultramarine legion (which is just an ever growing collection of unpainted firstborn from 40k and 30k) needs a few token pods!

The key to this kit will be whether the door pieces have exterior detailing. GW tells us the rocks are optional; I don't see much point in them being optional if the doors don't have exterior detailing. What I'm hoping is that ambitious modellers can convert hinged doors if they want to...

Because fixed open doors are just... Dull.

Also, two in a box will make the kit more expensive, and will likely include unit splitting rules so that you can't use a single pod to deliver 10 models, which will invalidate single drop pods.

I might try and pick up one of the old kits before they disappear- having doors that open and close is a must-have option for me, and I'm not sure I want to take a chance on GW giving me the option to convert the model I want.

They also just posted an announcement that the Landraider turns 25 this month...

it´s perfect then for huron and corsairs. No need to even update the model, just give it another transfer sheet.

On drop pods... just... doors feel short and stumpy to me, and missing weapons makes it even more of just scenery more then active part of space marine loadout. Pics with primarineds make it look big but in other pics it looks short. GW made really weird decision with doors as it was simple build with doors, two/three fins connected to top and rubber band.

Old pod values gonna skyrocket now.

For me, I like that it looks like a proper drop pod, but the lack of any utility at all other than deep strike has me agreeing with the "meh" camp a bit. Still, dropping a load of blood claws in someones face is always a recipe for fun games.

What I do like, is the hopeful precedence of updated proper vehicles. I'd love to see updated rhinos, razobacks, whirlwinds, vindicators, predators and Land Raiders.
