Yeap, I know the weathering and battle damage is cool and all but.

But it's always look like something went wrong with army( at least for imperium armies and may be Tau) cause of that damage. Lore wise sergeant beats out a :cuss: from guardsmen and sm flagellate serves if armor not shiny enough. There is always time between battles. So how we a lot of times have so damaged dirty armies like it's middle of siege of Terra.

From a Lore perspective, Astartes can deploy for months at a time without returning to their ships. They aren't asking the Orks for a timeout to repaint their armour.

Battle damaged armies represent a snapshot of a force mid-campaign.

Whilst things will get damaged on campaign, from a realism point-of-view most modellers over-apply weathering and damage. However we could simply describe the current "grim-dark" style that is en-vogue at the moment as taking the idea of depicting a realistic "worn" state of equipment and creating a more stylised aesthetic from it, in a similar vein to the GW "'Eavy Metal" style. Ultimately, the goal is to create visual interest by adding detail, texture, rather than realism per se.

Personally, it's "not for me", but it can be very effective and I can see why others like it.

So here you have an excuse to come up with lots of weathering to suit your tastes. And war is not a sports event where you just walk home after a brief fire exchange to change clothes. Sometimes troops are cut off from reinforcements and may end up behind enemy lines for a significant period of time.
