I met GW at the age of 9, I think it was the set of WHFB with orks and imperials. Then some times later I found 40k and imperials guard and never play something else. During time I build and sell some of it keeping like 5k of them. I leave playing and hobby at the end of 7th cause local community is mutated by force of chaos into homicide murderous power play demons with mostly unpainted, half build, proxy armies since more players not interested in painting or modeling joining the hobby and flooded FLGS. Just can't stand it and leave. Sold everything at a new boxes price. Now after few years I have some spare time( or at least I think I have spare time) and started over again. And of course it's ASTRA MILITARUM. I'm already some time on B&C and it is the greatest WH community I'd seen so far. As a former IG player (my main army from 3.5 to 6th ed), I can well understand the appeal of many nicely painted troops and/or tanks. In a way, as a now chaos player, I am still painting guard, though mine now put "Death to the" instead of "For the" in front of "Emperor". If that's something you might be interested in, be sure to peruse the Realm of Chaos - some really nice takes on heretic guardsmen there.
