Im looking for some advice on black library novels from the last couple of years.

I haven't really read much for a couple of years apart from the a big reread of the horus heresy saga and the Dark imperium novels.

Ive recently read Interceptor city and was looking to get back into the guants ghost novels as i dropped off at Blood pact but am confused by some of the extra releases such as Volpone bluebloods,Sabbat war and Urdesh serpent and saint and Urdesh Magister and Martyr are these set before or at the same time as Warmaster. Which should be read first?

I have a similair query about the Cadia series and current timeline of books i know there's a series by justin D hill but theres also Cadia stands and The Fall of Cadia and Longshot which looks like a cadian novel. Just a bit confused by what the best novel covering cadia and what is a series and what isnt.

I did try the dawn of fire novels but fell off about 3 novels in, just looking to get back into things.

Thanks

I can vouch for Longshot. It is good. However, it is slow, and it is good because it is slow. When the pace speeds up, the book loses its charm.

Haven't read Hill's cadia series. I personally tend to look for non-Cadian regiments in guard novels, but Fall of Cadia takes place before both Longshot and Hill's series.

Volpone Bluebloods and the Silver Snakes books are NOT part of the Gaunt's Ghosts series, but they are set in the Sabbat Worlds crusade. They do not need to be read chronologically.

I'm not sure about Interceptor City, since it is by Abnett, so it might be more connected to Gaunt's Ghosts.

As for other "recent" books to get back in... I dunno.

A recent book I cannot recommend enough is "Elemental Council". On the topic of Xenos, "Twice dead King" and "Da Big Dakka" are also top tier.

For Imperium themed things, I always beg people to get into the Dark Coil. There's been a recent release called in the Black Library site if I recall correctly.

So off the top of my head:

Regarding Gaunt's Ghosts and the Sabbat Worlds-related works:

- Volpone Glory is set some time after Necropolis, but is otherwise such a standalone novel that it essentially doesn't really matter where in the Ghosts/broader Sabbat Crusade.

Sabbat War is really meant for after Anarch. There are at least two or three stories that are explicit follow-ups to events in that novel. Some of the other stories are definitely more standalone.

Urdesh is one big novel (in two parts: S&S and M&M). It takes place concurrently with The Warmaster.

For the Cadia stuff:

Cadia Stands is the first book in the Minka Lesk series by Hill. It and The Fall of Cadia by Robert Rath occur concurrently; they're both covering the events of, sure enough, the Fall of Cadia, but from different perspectives. The Fall of Cadia by Rath is more directly an adaptation of the Gathering Storm campaign book and focuses on the "big player"/heroic mythological perspectives. Hill's Cadia Stands is more of a companion piece depicting snippets of the apocalypse from across the world and often reads more like a monograph of a historical battle.

Cadia Stands leads to the continuing Minka Lesk series about what happens with a particular group of Cadian soldiers afterwards.

Longshot is set after the Fall of Cadia but is functionally a standalone novel. There's some thematic overlap with the early Lesk novels about what it means to be Cadian when there's no longer a Cadia, but it's not connected to the "broader narrative" or anything like that. It's just a solid single novel.

Thanks for your replies really appreciate it, ive read some of the Dark coil books specifically the the cult of the spiral dawn and fire caste but im confused as to how they are linked. Are they all set in the same timeframe, i dont remember any crossover as such.

The fun of The Dark Coil is finding the links between the stories yourself:biggrin:
