Even better than DoW 4! They are remastering DoW 1!

https://youtu.be/RFFinkjq4dY?si=RsfIxUZLM0c57VHD

Honestly I'm actually pretty stoked about that. The visuals are improved (not hugely but certainly noticably) and the aesthetic hasn't been abandoned, but honestly I'm more excited about the 64-bit support and mod manager than anything else. Given how DoW tended to struggle on modern machines, especially with the more demanding mods, that's actually a REALLY big deal.

DoW is *the* game that got me into 40k (and by extension, tabletop wargaming in general) over 20 years ago.
Its no exaggeration to say that I am the person I am, live the way I do, live where I currently do, and have the friends I currently have, thanks to this one game alone. It's mindboggling to think about. I still play DoW (Soulstorm in particular) on a somewhat regular basis, and have several tunes from the game in my playlist.

With all that in mind, I should be the perfect potential buyer for this game, and I just felt kinda "ehh..." when I saw the trailer.

I won't say it's as bad as the "they're the same picture"-meme, but for a remaster of an over 20 year old game, the differences felt miniscule.

I guess the improved modding options will be the big selling point, but if they're asking for plus €50 for it, it'll be a hard pass.
Fingers crossed, but I probably would've been more hyped about a "new" DoW 3 (or arguably, even a "new" DoW 2.)

Delighted to see Relic's name on the Dawn of War remaster and not someone else. It's THEIR game. Harpies have been picking away their IPs after a decade of Sega mismanagement. Relic is independent now, the remaster would go along way of floating the company and getting them back in to regular game development - they're focused on smaller scale games right now under the Relic Labs label and just recently on a turn based strategy called Earth Vs Mars, very proud to see them working on original concepts again after been blocked from doing so for so long.

I just got flashbacks from browsing the Relicnews-forums 2 decades ago. The 40k fluff-section in particular was particularily interesting for a young, fledgling 40k enthusiast (minus the recurrent topics about "how do Eldar breed").
Ahh, back when the internet was young and innocent...

Now I'm feeling nostalgic and sad.
...Time to install DoW Soulstorm again for the umpteenth time.

Do we have any info on what happens with the people like me that already owns all the DoW 1 expansions? Normally with other games we would either get the new game for free or a heavy discount.

Who is handing out discounts? Warcraft 3: Reforged didn't do this - they did give people with a original game a license so they could play WC3 reforged but they could only play with classic graphic settings, none of the remastered content (their remastered content was unpopular, but that's besides the point...). And that was only because the classic version of the game was "going away" and would be unsupported.

This is a high effort remaster for Relic in a time they're not great shape and have gone independent - i doubt you're getting a discount. I dunno, support indy devs if this important to you.

Relic have apparently answered this on Discord.

Don't think so. We also have not announced the price, but it will be competitive.

Also now that the hype has faded. I'm concerned it maybe a Warcraft Refunded situation. Remember, no preorders.

So, Reforged wasn't well received because primarily because it replaced Warcraft 3 and was missing features. Fans also didn't like the art direction on the reforged graphics. I actually was on a small team for a little bit that was putting missing features back into Reforged like like Clans and Tournaments lol and also repainting all the terrain textures. They also re-made the old campaign (not remastered  - completely remade) and it was a bit rushed and had bugs.

This DoW remaster is looking pretty faithful. The upres'd graphics are on point and it sounds like Relic got the rights for the classic audio too rather than opt for a cheaper re-record. Dobson bros for the win!

Oh man. I'm looking forward to non 4x3 aspect ratio, and legacy mod support.

I remember when the team and I played Daemonhunt vs the Relic devs, so much fun. Buggo and the crew.

Getting that and Steel Legion running will be aces.

It also looks like they are adding specular maps to more units, they were added too Necrons but no other race sorted them.

Apparently, according to the unification mod post on their discord, they are directly collaborating with relic on the game. So chances are the mod and others like it will work from the get go.

I wish some other companies would at least attempt to keep their old titles alive like this.

Command and Conquer did a similar thing a couple of years ago. It’s definitely a good thing to have happen. I just need a decent laptop to play them on.

oh man, Buggo, that takes me back. She was so good to me when I started at Relic. This was like... 2007? It was my first time working in a studio environment.

Working on computer games sounds like a fun and rewarding career. I can barely carry out basic functions on a computer and my computer literacy could be called subpar. I was good at what I did do for a living though, before I became ill, I worked as a fabricator/welder, even winning an award at trade school one year. I was pretty rubbish when I started but got good, real good pretty quickly in order to keep a roof over my head, food in my stomach and the ale flowing.

Do you know if Thudmizer is involved? That man was crazy committed.

He carried DoW modding on his back , community engagement, programming the whole 9 yards.

Man's a legend.

The game that started it all for me... This was probably the best news for the Skulls event for me, I've spend thousands of hours on each of the various games so replaying them with prettier graphics will be a bonus. The only downside is that the FoK (Firestorm over Kronus/Karuva) mods probably won't work on this and the teams have long since moved on, those mods were the best...

No clue if they're directly involved, but they are on the discord as recently active as the beginning of the month, and listed among the mod dev team. I would hazard a guess if they are listed they are involved.

Going to put my hand in my pocket for this one. DoW was a seminal game for me and I got a ludicrous amount of hours out of it - even if I don't end up playing it all that much, I want to show that an audience for Dawn of War is still there regardless of how DoWIII panned out.

Dawn of War 1 takes me back. I remember Relic releasing the opening cinematic as a torrent because the file was "so large".

I much preferred it over the sequel (which was a very different game, really) ... probably doesn't help that I completed the base game on one of the harder difficulty settings and then got stuck at the end of the first mission on the expansion.

Looking at my games library I can see a few, although given Relic have confirmed they won't be doing it, it's somewhat moot. Hopefully it'll be released at a price that sees it flying off the metaphorical shelves - good for us in that it's not too expensive, and good for Relic in that they get extra sales.
