I have had an airbrush for several years now, it's a single tank timber tech thing from Amazon. I got it for base coating only but have never really got on well with it. I have changed the 'brush' for an iwata neo and then a h&s ultra with the collar but I still don't get on with it. I get constant blockages and after using it for any longer than about 20 mins I seem to get water coming through the brush even though there is a moisture trap. I am thinking of getting a better compressor to try and was hoping for some suggestions from more experienced airbrushers. I only intended to use it for base coating so don't really want to spend more than £150. Any suggestions?

Fengda's AS line of compressors seem to be quite popular and seem to have reasonable durability, from what I've read. I think the one lots of people have is the AS-186, but my memory may be misbehaving on that one!

Sparmax make nice compressors (they're the OEM for Iwata and are owned by them now), but it looks like they've had noticeable price increases over the last couple of years which takes them out of your budget range (I have a TC-620X).

The main thing to look for would be one with a reasonable range of pressures (up to 60psi), a reasonable tank (2.5l or so), a moisture trap, and sensible volume/noise character.

I’m not sure what they cost these days, but I have an Iwata compressor which has been really good. It’s not had the heaviest use but I’ve had it since about 2012 or so and it’s still going strong. It cost around £150 give or take I think.

edit - I’ve just had a google and the one that looks like mine is going for around £350-400 depending on source.
