UltramarineMD
Hello everyone, I'm an older 4th year medical student in DC. When I was younger, I was huge into the historical TotalWar series, playing every single one as they came out, and I fell in love with Warhammer Fantasy when that total war game came out - Franz will always be my first Emprah. It took a while, but 40k has completely taken over my interest in the last 4 years or so. I've played most of the 40k video games now (Rogue Trader probably my favorite, can't wait for the new DLC), and I have dozens of books, stickers, shirts, etc. I also played Space Marine when it first came out a decade + ago, but didn't really know what I was seeing or exploring. Unfortunately I have not had time to actually paint anything. I have a Leviathan box set I was able to snag when it came out (and just got the new space wolves), and am planning to move into model painting once I finish my intern year next year. Currently, reading 20m before I sleep is the only real engagement I can get right now, so my focus is on books and lore. My book collection continues to grow - over the last year I've been collecting limited edition Dawn of Fire books (only need the Wolftime now - but WAY too expensive for me on Ebay, and I don't have facebook). Currently reading Lelith Hesperax. Happy to find a new community where I can talk and read about 40k - sadly none of my friends are into it like I am, and my girlfriends support stops at playing BoltGun on the easiest difficulty ha. Khulu
Welcome! As far as finding time to engage with the hobby, I listen to audiobooks on my commute or as I walk. If you are doing much of either that could be an option! Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/386021-hello-from-dc/#findComment-6113481 Share on other sites

UltramarineMD
I hear good things about the audiobooks, I definitely need to look into them. Though...there is just something so satisfying about a physical book these days. Any tips/tricks on the forum itself? Seems huge! Dr_Ruminahui
Welcome! Some tips for forum navigating: 1. There are a lot of different faction forums (due to there being a lot of 40K factions), but I doubt many people visit them all. My advice is for you to visit those that interest you - for me, that's the various chaos forums, the WIP forum and the Hall of honour forum. For you, if lore is your current interest, you may want to check out the Black Library forum. 2. You can post the same thing in different forums, provided its relevant to each. For example, posting photos of my Slaaneshi demonettes as part of my Emperor's Children army, I could put them in the EC subforum, the Demons forum and/or (depending on their state of completion) the WIP or Hall of Honour forums. 3. Engage to the extent and the frequency that makes sense for you. 4. When/if you do start painting models, be sure to share them in the appropriate forum(s). In the meantime, be sure to look at, react to and comment on other peoples' work. Starting on June 15, the Call to Arms event starts - but even if you aren't painting, drop by the Stronghold for your favourite factions (all of which are in the WIP forum) and cheer on the painters there. Hope you enjoy your time here and I look forward to seeing you around. UltramarineMD
Awesome - thanks for all the advice! Looking forward to cheering on the blueberries! Your slaaneshi demons look awesome, I've never seen that skin color on them, it's always the purple grey in my mind. I really can't wait to start painting! Random question for anyone: in the blacklibrary section, are we allowed to ask about trades/buying/selling books? I don't see a rule specifically against it, but I also don't really see anyone posting about it? (trying to finish my Dawn of Fire limited collection, only need the Wolftime) Dr_Ruminahui 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/386021-hello-from-dc/#findComment-6113633 Share on other sites

I really can't wait to start painting! You're welcome, and thank you! I wanted to make mine more natural coloured, as fluff wise (for my warband) they were originally possessed humans and my head canon of demonettes is that they have the ability to make themselves look like uncanny valley versions of whoever the viewer finds the most physically attractive. Plus, I never liked the GW grey scheme, and couldn't think of something different that I wanted to repeat across my slowly growing army. If I were to start again from scratch, I might make them all the black/dark brown, as that looks really nice against the obnoxious pink of their clothes. kabaakaba
Quote my head cannon of demonettes is that they have the ability to make themselves look like uncanny valley versions of whoever the viewer finds the most physically attractive. Iirc there is something similar in one of HH books that they looks like what their victim need to see to follow them. Also welcome to B&C it's greatest 40k community I see so far. Pray you get your sweet painting time. Alby the Slayer Posted yesterday at 02:47 AM Share Posted yesterday at 02:47 AM Welcome @UltramarineMD, For me painting and kitbashing is very relaxing, it can be very good to use as a break between studies. It's also the closest you can get to venerate the God Emperor properly, painting his glorious army! So, after your training as Apothecarion is done, I suggest you send your girlfriend to fight in the Imperial Guard, burn all your books (An open mind is like a fortress with its gates unbarred and unguarded) and just paint until your hands and eyes are bleeding! Just a mild and sane suggestion, Frater. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/386021-hello-from-dc/#findComment-6114456 Share on other sites
WBRBloom
Welcome UltramarineMD (love the screen name). I've always loved the Warhammer literature. Not everything is the best, there are some very badly written books, especially from the HH series that needed to have a lot of fillers, but the majority of them are decent and help flesh out the world. You should give these a try as well, if you haven't already.
