I think it's a not so stealthy replacement for Unforgiven Task Force. Regardless, I think this is a real competitor for Gladius Task Force if you're including Dark Angel specific units.

The army rule is great as more armies look to bring higher strength weapons. I think it creates some real hardiness in Biker, Gravis, and Terminator units, to say nothing of how it boosts survivability of bog-standard T4 infantry.

Just a better version of Weapons of the First Legion? No increase to attacks, but +2 Str moves any weapon up a To Wound break point and improving armor pen is great for weapons with AP2.

Absolutely classic.

This actually has some interesting play with one of the strats.

2 CP for a 2nd Oath target if the first is destroyed. The range restriction makes me think this is meant to be used as a melee buff, but it could benefit shooting. It's a bit expensive; I think you'd have to be targeting two must kill units to make it worthwhile?

Oh look, it's a pre-emptive Grim Resolve for one unit and gives +1 to Hit for Greenwing for shooting and melee for two full turns. For one CP. Mmmmm, yes.

Ha, sucks to be a Space Wolves' detachment.

Yes, just yes. This increases threat range so much for such a variety of units. Ravenwing with attached Lord of the Ravenwing become a very consistent zoomy across the board threat.

Interesting wording. It's effectively +1 to wound (I think? Might be +2 in some cases?), but because it's a Str increase it will stack with an actual +1 to wound effect. Though I don't think DA have a way to get that on ranged attacks? Obvious uses include Black Knights, Hellblasters, Desolators, and Eradicators. Less obvious: Terminators with Librarian, Aggressors, Infernus Squads.

Let's be honest. This is a 1 CP Heroic Intervention (no charge bonuses) for all the Terminator units, the Bladeguards, the Dreadnoughts, and the Inner Circle Companions. Psychological shenanigans abound, particularly paired with Deep Striking.

What do you all think?

EDIT:

I forgot to add it because I think it is the enhancement you don't take:

Biker units still aren't good here, but at least a minimum Outrider squad + Chaplain is cheap enough. I'd do one squad of that.

Overall I think it can compete with Gladius since, even though Gladius gives movement shenanigans, the durability buff is frankly outstanding. Azrael + ICC won't die to a stiff breeze.

Ravenwing Command squads attached to a 6 man Outrider squad do some serious mileage already. With the -1 to wound they become pretty tasty, expecially with it meaning your Appthecary gets more chance to bring back a model before the unit dies. Couple this with the Ravenwing/shooty strength strats and you have some good mobility, good resilience and very good damage potential (especially the champion).

Anyone building lists and getting games in with this detachment?

I played a 1k game the other day with it against Black Legion. It was just an FA game (A standing for "Around"), and my friend who normally plays Ultramarines or Black Templars instead wanted the ease of coming over and just playing my "house army" which is CSM Black Legion lol ... so nothing serious. He did gripe about my units basically having the old 9th edition trans-human strat/buff lol. I particularly like the stratagems and enhancements for it too. in my very amateurish opinion, it's a good detachment for us, arguably our best in-house detachment.

Whats units did you use? It seems like a good generalist type detachment that can use everything.

Azrael with 5 Sternguard

Apothecary biologist with 3 Aggressors

Judiciar with 3 Inner Circle Companions

5 Intercessors

Gladiator Lancer

Deathwing terminator squad

Enhancements on both eligible characters

Agreed. I think it is hands down the best detachment for an all-around, low/no vehicle Space Marine army. The floor is a lot lower than Gladius, though the ceiling is not as high.

I haven't played my Dark Angels yet under Gladius, it's only been Unforgiven Task Force, and now Wrath of the Rock. On my 40k to-do list.

  • 2 weeks later...

I played against this detachment with my Votan.

Was 1500 pts.

Had roughly:

The Lion

Azrael  plus inner circle

Calidus assassin

5 heavy intercessors

5 scouts

Balistus Dread

Assault intercessors JP

Eradicators

Probably something else I don't remember

Anyways the -1 to wound was huge because most of the marines have T4 and many of my guns had S6 so I was wounding on 4s only

Had to commit a lot more resources to eliminate the regular guys which means The Lion and Azzy surgically eliminated the treats and allowed scoring of points. We called it at bottom turn 4. I was losing by 14 and could score 12 points max... My opponent had Lion, Azzy, calidus and heavy intercessors alive and I still had 1000 points alive but not effective in scoring.

Was a good game!

I've played two additional Wrath of the Rock lists, one versus Tyranid Crusher Stampede, and one versus Black Templars playing under the Ironstorm Spearhead.

It performed well in each game. Maybe I'm more casual and thematic than pure competitive, but I think its the one I'm going to keep playing and learn inside and out.
