ThePenitentOne
I've been playing 40k since 1989, but in all that time I have remained a Forgeworld virgin. That changed today. Hermiatus, the second son, Xenos-tainted techpriest is on his chittering way to my collection. He was just THAT good, and he only became available online over the weekend. That's happened once before in the past few months... And just as I prepared to make the order, POOF! He was gone again. But today, I got him locked down. I'm kinda nervous about it- I HATE resin, and I work with it as rarely as I can get away with. Most of my issue is glue- it doesn't flash bond like plastic, so I usually end up trying to hold it forever, and even then, that's never long enough. I've also heard tales of warped resin needing to be bent into shape after a warm-water bath, and I've heard that even if the model doesn't need a bath to be bent back into shape, you always need to wash resin in soapy water before you paint it. Any tips from those who work with resin might be helpful. And what, might you ask, are my plans for Hermiatus? Well, he's a tech priest on loan to the Blood Angels to help them maintain one of their smaller vessels (Hunter Class Destroyer). The ship has been infested with Genestealers, and Hermiatus had enough of the weak flesh that he was susceptible to the Curse. For those of you who have been here for a while, you may remember that I began a GSC Crusade with a game of Spacehulk. Well Hermiatus ups the ante on that game. The original was played on a 2d Spacehulk puzzleboard, and the 'Stealers had to get to the small escape pods originally released with KT: Rogue Trader in order to make planetfall, where they could begin their cult. But it never really sat well- How would Genestealers know how to use an escape pod? And I never had many of these pods (four I think?), so with single occupancy, I had to fudge it a little, reusing pods once they had launched. But NOW I have the tools to build a beautiful 3d board with the Into the Dark Terrain, I have an actual Space Marine drop pod (yes, I found one with opening doors before the new lower quality replacement hits the market, displacing the good with the worse), and of course, Hermiatus to help the 'Stealers figure out what the heck a drop pod is AND how to use one. It will change the dynamic once the 'Stealers make planetfall- in the original game, they were unaccompanied by helpful allies, so they had to rely on predatory instincts to infect local hosts, rather than having someone to help them with strategic thinking, but I think it'll make the small initial cult more narratively versatile earlier in the campaign. Marshal Rohr
Boil some water, scrub the model with an old tooth brush and non-alcohol dish soap, take water off the heat and let it cool for a few mins then drop the model in the hot water and let it sit until you can put a finger in the water and it’s still warm. Scrub the model with more of the resin safe soap and dunk it back in about two or three more times and repeat, then rinse the model with clean water (spray it if you’ve got a spray attachment) and let it dry. If anything is still bent clip it away from the gate and then use a hair dryer on it for about thirty seconds. Hold it in a towel so you don’t scorch your hand. When it gets floppy from the hair dryer heat, pull it straight and then blow on it with your mouth as fast as you can. Once it is no longer floppy it’s safe to glue. To glue take a hobby knife and scour a few lines on the contact point, the scour lines directly perpendicular to those lines making a checkerboard pattern. Do this on both sides. Then use super glue only to glue it together. Prime with your primer of choice. viola, you’ve cleaned and built a resin model. If you don’t have a hairdryer to bend it back in place you can try boiling water again but it might just be easier to ask a girlfriend or family member to borrow it for the day. Never get anything with acetone/alcohol on it. Never use enamels or oils directly on the resin. Never stick your fingers directly in the hot cleaning water always tap check it first. Dont apply as much pressure to the model as you would for plastic. Dont saw it close to your face. skylerboodie
I can't recommend one of these heat tools enough, so much easier than water baths or hair dryers for working with resin, makes reshaping pieces so simple and easy. StratoKhan
Some guides etc. will tell you to warm pieces for reshaping through either: - a hot water bath or - using hot air (hair dryer or similar) on the part This is just my perspective, but soaking the part in hot water has never worked well for me, and hot air has always worked as intended. I would also say that with resin, some pinning of critical parts is helpful. Superglue will of course work fine to keep a resin model together, but pinning adds robustness in case of knocks or falls. For those who used to own metal models it’s a familiar task, but it can be offputting for people who are only used to plastic kits. kabaakaba
as a guy who have resin-only i recomend hair dryer. water never works for me. with dryier you can target exact part( like sword tip for example). alsp for better resuld sandpaper parts you soak with glue. Cactus
My Hermiatus needed no straightening, so you're probably ok there. My suggestions are i) don't remove the smaller parts from the gates until you're going to attach them, and ii) test fit everything repeatedly. I found it harder than usual to identify the connection points on the main body but when a part is in the right place it feels right. Oh, and iii) don't assemble everything in the order laid out in the instructions. Take your time, be patient, and you'll have a wonderful xenos-mechanicum monstrosity at the end of it.
