This is less a question about Chaos Knights as a faction and more a question about Chaos Knights as allies.

Specifically, Chaos Knights allied into Thousand Sons.

So, does the Knight Abominant work well souped into TSons?

Or is souping in 3 Wardogs better?

I'm not familiar enough with TSs to know what holes knights might fill.

My general feel for the new codex is that while the big knights are cheaper, and probably more durable against everything but legitimately anti-tank weapons (so, lascannons and up - the new lower T doesn't matter against the little stuff where they benefit from the new extra wounds), they still don't have enough killing power to justify their point costs.

As 1 big knight vs 3 small knights, a big knight is (roughly) 2.5x more expensive than the small knights for 2 higher T and roughly double the wounds.  As for its guns and melee weapons, that can be hard to put a number value to, but I would say they are about 1.5x to 2x as effective as the equivalent weapons on the smaller knights.  Given the value of just having more bodies and them being easier to hide, I think from a gameplay perspective you are still better off going small knights over big knights, especially as allies where the big knight auras have little value (as they usually buff wardogs) and you can't benefit from the knight enhancements and stratagems, which both generally favour the big knights.

That said, that's purely a gameplay comparison.  Nothing cooler than a having a knight Abominant towering over your rubrics, IMHO, so if you are of like mind and table performance isn't your chief concern, I'm not going to dissuade you from doing that.

I don't think the Knight Abominant is particularly a good fit for Thousand Sons. Thematically is it kinda cool since it is a psychic Knight but in terms of rules, it is not so hot. It's Battleshock rules are designed to work with the Knight faction ability so he doesn't offer any obvious synergy. His weapons also don't really bring anything the 1KSons are missing.

Wardogs give you some fast-moving Dreadnought-equiv models with flexible loadout. The Desecrator gives you a honking great anti-tank gun and the usual melee loadout. This actually gives you some capability the 1KSons lack. In fact almost any other Knight is going to be an improvement over the Abominant.

Sadly Chaos Knight are lacking an equivalent of Canis Rex who is tailor made for allying into other lists as his abilities are pretty much self-contained.
