RondyReeves Posted yesterday at 08:09 AM Share Posted yesterday at 08:09 AM Oh wait, this is Warhammer and not Warcraft; my bad. if you get the reference we can totally be friends. Howdy! I am on the wrong side of 45 and staring down the barrel of 50. Don’t ever get older - it’s an absolute trap. Here is my shame: the confessions of a Plastic Crack Addict. I was first introduced to Warhammer back in 1996/7 when a buddy of mine worked at the GW store that was once in White Marsh, Maryland. I was 18 or 19 at the time and saw the game as interesting but definitely more as a hobby for rich folk rather than an electricians’ helper who was making $6.25/hr (actually not all that bad in the mid-90s) and so I didn’t pay it any attention. Jump many years to the future - after telling my daughter how grateful I was that I never got into Warhammer games because of how freaking expensive it is while we were checking out D&D and Call of Cthulhu stuff at our local Nerd Store my dumb self then decided to buy the Starter Set for 9th Edition just for funsies. I discovered that I absolutely love putting the minis together. Not painting, mind you - just putting them together. I then somehow stumbled upon the Richard Boylan animated movie version of ‘Helsreach’ and I became insanely hooked on the lore as a result. And yes, the Black Templars are my favorite Chapter because I just think that they’re insanely cool. Now it’s 2025 and I’m still not wealthy, but I have thousands of 40K, Horus Heresy, and Age of Sigmar minis stashed just about everywhere through my home. I have so many that I forget which ones I do and don’t have, though I’ve thankfully not bought more than one Character model because it’s pretty easy to remember which of those that I have. I’m so addicted to Plastic Crack that I’ll be picking up my Saturnine box this coming Saturday and I still haven’t finished putting together all of the minis from the 2nd Edition Launch Box that I bought like two years ago. And no, pretty much none of them have been painted. I just buy, build, and then stuff into containers when they’re done. I’m terrified of painting them because I know that they won’t look great, but I expect everything that I do to be as good or better than people who are actually experts who have years of practice, and it pisses me off when I don’t achieve the goal that I set for myself. If I paint a mini it has to look at least as good as the pictures of them do on the box. That’s insane, I know, but I’m not 100% right in the head. One of these days I really AM going to start painting - I found paint markers which should be much easier for me to use than paint brushes are, so I think that I can do at least a decent enough job to put them on the table against players who do care if they’re painted or not. I’m not the type who cares - I let a buddy use his daughter’s Barbie doll as a proxy for Angron once. Who cares? I’m just here to have fun! But I will never live long enough to paint them all, not if I have to keep working for a living and even if I were rich and could quit working I probably still wouldn’t get the damn things done. I have armies for virtually every faction in 40K and AoS with few exceptions like the Mechanicus because my God those minis look like they take six years to complete. It’s not that I don’t think that they’re cool, just overly complicated. I’ll probably start one sooner or later though because Plastic Crack. and with that I will stop typing; you’re probably already regretting the three minutes that you’ll never get back. I’m looking forward to reading posts on this site and perhaps engaging with those of you whose knowledge of the lore far surpasses that of my own! May the dice always roll in your favor - as long as you’re not my opponent! Some of my first games used Playmobils and Legos... Since thatb time I alos gathered and stored many minis that were left mostly unpainted for 2 decades. Lockdown changed that. Ican tell you that painting is a process that improves with time as long as you try new stuff and new techniques. Modern paints do marvels and helps a lot. It is now possible to recah a decent level rapidly. But as all learning processes it has hi and lows. Sometimes you do not progress but changing type of mini and colour pallets leads you in a new direction and unlocks something. It worked for me while I shifted from almost monochromatic Marines to Mechanicus... I can only ancourage you to try your best and see where it brings you. the Call to Arm Challenge might be a good incentive for gaining motivation and keeping the momentum... WBRBloom Posted yesterday at 08:58 AM Share Posted yesterday at 08:58 AM Welcome on board @RondyReeves! I don't think there are any people that are into the hobby, that haven't used a proxy model or two, except maybe the people who work at GW and paint miniatures for a living. Shard of Magnus
Welcome to the B&C! Doing what you enjoy is how you should hobby. I’ve known several people that have frustrated themselves trying to convert/paint/play when it wasn’t the activity they were passionate about. If you do want to get into painting then I suggest checking out the Forge section. There are a number of people who can give guidance and support if and when you try it. Painting is a thing you need to practice, and there are differing approaches that you may find fit your style and that you like visually. Perhaps starting on a few smaller minis in your collection would be a good entry point. And just wait until you cross 50! Every day can be a new experience of random creaks and aches! As @Bouargh noted, the Call to Arms painting event is ongoing until mid September - its a great way to get some paint on models to the encouragement of your fellow members.
