The datasheets for the 40k Raptors/Warp Talons and Celestian Insidiants are now in their respective Faction Packs.

  • Raptors are 110pts for five, 210 for ten.
  • Insidiants are 120pts for 10.
  • No change to Warp Talons (125/270).

I guess this means you can still make a full unit as Warp Talons out of the box? Pre-order can't be far away either.

Raptors can no longer take two of the same Special Weapons (per five). (Though they can now take 2 Plasma Pistol + Chainsword dudes separately from the 2 Special Weapons.)

They have gained two Heavy Melee Weapons per five (plus the Champion's), and one "Mutations" (ie Accursed Weapon)... so....

Takes on a pretty different role. Gone from:

  • Champion with Plasma Pistol+Power Fist, 2 Special Weapons, 2 basic guys

Acting as a cheap scoring unit with a touch of firepower, to the actual melee punchiness of:

  • Champion with Plasma Pistol+HMW, 2 HMWs, 1 Mutations, 1 Special Weapon (or Plasma Pistol + Chainsword)

//

Suffers a bit (like Plague Marines) where the "basic" loadout of Bolt Pistol + Chainsword no longer has any reason to see play.

I'm fortunate to have converted my Raptors from Berzerkers, so a couple were already using Eviscerators as Chainswords; but a lot of current players' Raptors models are going to end up on the shelf.

Does anyone see any changes to the warptalons? I can’t see anything different. Why put it in the data pack?

They get the Grenade Keyword, I suppose.

Love the idea of a warp talon trying to get a grenade from his pouch whilst trying not to lacerate himself with his own talons.

They got Grenades for some reason.

No update allowing a Chaos Lord with Jump-pack to lead Warp Talons

That's what the last new Detachment is for.

I disagree solely because Plague Marines have the constant issue of not getting into melee as easily as a Jump Pack unit, so you'll always want shooting capability. In the case of Raptors, if you're doing a melee centric Detachment (that's 99% of them LOL), you might still want the Chainsword since you're constantly trying to keep them out of range and LOS from your opponent and might just have a Strat to Advance + Charge.

With the new melee version of raptors, I'm having trouble seeing the role for warp talons except for their ability to reenter reserves (and clearing 1 wound chaff units) - the raptors are both cheaper and punch harder in melee.

I'm definitely going to have to consider how/if I reconfigure those 20-odd metal raptors I have - kind of glad that I never got around to painting them.  I'll probably hold off until they appear in a printed codex, though.

And I agree that the maximized special weapon load out is also kind of obselete now as well - both because the melee version is just plain better, and because you can no longer specialize... and I don't think the ability to take specials and plasma pistols makes up for it, though it does make them a bit punchier while requiring them to be within 12 to get the benefit of that.

As a final note, kind of strange they made the glaives heavy melee weapons rather than the same as the chainglaive in the Nemesis claw unit- not that I'm complaining, it just compounds my feeling that it not being a heavy melee weapon for the Nemesis Claws was a odd choice.  As well, given their spear like appearance, I'm surprised they didn't make it a unique weapon with the [Lance] keyword -maybe because they wanted to limit the number of weapon profiles on an already busy datasheet.

It might be an odd choice, but this is vastly better vs rolling 5 different weapons for a single activation of 5 man Nemesis Claws.

Not disagreeing, though it would probably only have been 4 for the raptors - heavy weapon (x2, including the power fist), mutations, glaive and chainsword (or close combat weapon). Still, 3 is far better than 4 (or 5)... I stopped playing chosen in 8th because my multiple melee weapon loadout from the Dark Vengence kit gave me conniptions in resolution and casualty removal.

So don't get me wrong, I'm happy GW made both the fist and the glaive heavy melee weapons, I'm just surprised.  It also makes me more comfortable giving my legionaires spear like heavy melee weapons rather than just axe shaped ones, which is nice from a converting/squad variation perspective.

I like those Celestia. But whats a denuncia oratory? They can equipp one, but it does not have rules.

It allows you to denounce your opponent verbally at no extra cost.

Look under the Wargear abilities. It lets you chose a new quarry after the first one is destroyed.

The new Celestians look utterly terrifying as a TSons player who mainly fights SoB armies.

I think it's neat it's another melee unit to really help promote melee Sisters armies.
