Blegh. Not a fan of defining it.

Every time they explicitly define some element in the setting, it shrinks the borders that much more. One of the compelling aspects of 40k as a setting is that sense of mystery and potential, those corners of the unknown and "here be dragons".

Yeah, I agree. Feels like 40K is getting closer to being Warhammer Fantasy and 11th will be AoS

I found out about this last night. Pretty disappointing reveal and I hate the fact it had to be defined too. A lot of the things they reveal these days either fall flat on their face or they make the setting feel smaller and less magical. It seems that every other Codex in 10th edition featured some sort of fumble like this. I will be skipping this codex too because there is next to nothing new for the Grey Knights out at the moment and I'm only interested in the models. I really wanted to like 10th Edition, I even got Leviathan and the Dark Angels codex. It was just disappointing in the end. I stopped caring about the modern storyline of 40K (or what's considered "canon" these days) with the White Dwarf Exorcists article when they turned them into diet Dark Angels without a Betcher's Gland.

What's the point of revealing the Terminus Decree anyway? All the big writers at the Black Library and GW came out in force to tell us that there is no canon. So why bother writing stuff like this or the recent Wraithbone change that was in the Eldar codex?

How many Grey Knights are there, has a number ever been given? I know they are described as a Chapter but since they exist outside the normal structure of Space Marines, the Codex Astartes clearly does not apply to them.

The Decree implies that they would need to fight the Custodians who are 10,000 strong and superior even to Grey Knights. So unless there are something like 20,000+ GKs, I cannot see how they could carry out the Terminus Decree.

8 Brotherhoods, Paladin Company, Purifier Company so 10 companies....100 Grey Knights per Company.

From where I sit this is just the latest example of a trend towards really poorly thought out worldbuilding form GW. Of course there may be more to it in the codex when fully revealed, like some form of weapon or plan to make it achievable, but as presented it appears:

"Hey guys, if things ever might get better, make sure to kick off another civil war, thanks."

As a concept, I do like that this would be an order the Emperor would give to the Grey Knights. "I'm about to do something crazy and it's going to mess me up. Whatever I say, whatever I do, do not let me leave this chair. And if I do leave this chair, get me back in it ASAP, got it!?"

It makes for a fine point of conflict between the Custodes and Grey Knights, which is really all this seems to be. Rationale for a particular TT matchup.

It being the Terminus Decree is the real letdown.

Seen this mentioned as speculation online but is it possible that the Terminus Decree we've now seen is only part of a larger plan?

More specifically,

Spoiler

If Big E gets up off his chair and all Grey Knights are obligated to go over and try and make him sit down again, isn't that just sending ~1,000+ Astartes-tier Psykers for Big E to Snack on while he regenerates?
Man is already fuelled by Psykers as is so a quick influx of very very powerful Psykers right as he's doing the most strenuous activity he's done in millennia seems like a good way to ensure he doesn't stand up and immediately collapse from exhaustion and die 'cause he hit his head on the chair as he drops.

It seems like the kinda plan Malcador would have beamed into his head and recorded for the future he knew was coming.

Very Young Frankenstein:
" No matter what you hear in there, no matter how cruelly I beg you, no matter how terribly I may scream, do not open this door or you will undo everything I have worked for. Do you understand? Do not open this door!"

You've explained it very well. The Terminus Decree being revealed is saddening, as you say.

If the decree is written after the Emperor was enthroned, then who wrote it? Can't have been him or Malcador. Can't imagine anyone else with that level of authority. Valor would be the only one who might come close and I can think of a bunch of reasons why it's not him.

Actually I could see it being Valdor. He had spent a long time slaying daemons with the Apollonian Spear. This weapon was forged by the Emperor and grants its wielder insight into whatever it kills. He probably understood daemons better than anyone apart from the Emps and Malcador by the end of the Siege. He knew about the GKs and probably understood why the Emperor had to stay enthroned, no matter what.

We might get some insight in Bequin: Pandemonium since it looks like it might feature the return of Valdor.

Wouldn't the Custodes have been a better force to entrust the duty with given they're right next to him most of the time?

In theory yes but they are also modified/programmed as his companions. If the Emperor got off the throne and gave an order, would the Custodians even be able to disobey?

The Grey Knights are more independent. Their mission is to eradicate daemons while they still have a base in the Sol system meaning they can still act as a quick response if necessary.

I think it is a bit silly, but I do like this attempt to take some seriousness in it;

I do think giving it a concrete definition has taken away from the Terminus Decree as "cool weird thing to ponder about", but I think it can also be taken seriously and have some sort of interesting impact on how we look at these possibilities.

I for one, think it's silly and boring lol

Also, if the decree is from the emperor himself, then why would the emperor even get off the throne... As he knows he shouldn't get off it?

Because what would get off the Throne is not the Emperor at all.
