Hi, I have purchased several zillion KT boxes and even painted some of them, played one game at a LGS and ehh, maybe I'll try again. I however really enjoy assembling and painting (albeit poorly) the models, and am considering getting stuff needed for an actual big army, but it's hard to decide on a faction.

What I really love is the lore, and have read nothing but 40/30k books the entirety of 2025 - probably already over like 40 books. Some are good, some aren't so great, but I'm showing no signs of stopping much to my wife's chagrin.  If anyone has any recommendations for books that are a little bit lighter on the battles and heavier on slice of life stuff, I'd be extremely interested. With millions of inhabited worlds, certainly some of them are relatively untouched by xenos or Ruinous Powers and I'd like to learn more about that. (I did read one of the Warhammer Crime books, which did kinda scratch that itch.)

I also firmly believe the Imperium are 100% the good guys. Extremism in the pursuit of liberty is no vice!

Feel free to share your thoughts on the Black Library (BL) section. There, you are very welcome to ask questions and look for insights/ review of our fellow fraters.

To give you some recommendations about the slice of life stuff:
There isn't a book that comes instantely to my mind, since the Warhammer40k universe is rather more about war and less about slice of life.
Nevertheless, I do think that some books share some insights that may encompass that:

  • "Dawn of Fire - The Avenging Son" by Guy Haley
  • "Vaults of Terra" series by Chris Wraight

The Eisenhorn and Ravenor series(es) by Dan Abnett have a little bit of the "slice of life" bit in the background, as they are (mostly) visiting planets that aren't battlefields (at least when they get there).

Not literature, but the Rogue Trader video game, while noting that its based on GW IP rather than GW produced, is also pretty good for giving you a glimpse of that.

Welcome aboard!

The suggestions by the other Fraters for the book are eccellent, and as you already saw, all the warhammer Crime books are good.

I would also reccomend you the horror series. They can show something different and interesting in the 40K, with a spooky vibe
