So I was too lazy assembling rhinos for the Call of Arms event and decided to put some preliminary work on my forthcoming Shattered Legion project. Three free Primaris test minis have been partly assembled to try a quartered knightly scheme. Right now I only finished the IH and DG versions and those don´t include decals and weathering:

Furthermore the album includes shoulder pads, decal sheets and the unbuilt Tactical Mk2 box.

A question for Death Guard and World Eaters experts: What decals on these sheets are used exclusively for traitor versions of the legions? For the Iron Hands it´s pretty obvious as they have decals depicting the eye of Horus but for the other two it´s not so clear at first glance.

And another thing: This project will be started in full swing after the Call of Arms event. At the moment only 500 points are planned for games with a boarding actions background. A good decision as painting these quartered schemes takes quite some time.

Update:

The WE version has been done yesterday:

Overall I am satisfied with the results although there needs still some tweaking to be done. The green portion of the DG version is a bit too dark for my taste so this means I won´t be leading with a dark green right after the white basecoat. Luckily I haven´t painted the whole mini yet so there is still space left on the right shoulder pauldron and the helmet to try out a more lighter green tone.

And another issue is the orange of the IH. When you put all three together they look like knights alright although one might question why the IH version is so clean compared to the other ones. At first I was too afraid that a brown wash might darken the orange parts too severely so that all following orange tones would be impaired in their impact. So I will add brown wash now to those parts after all and look how it turns out.

Update:

I changed my mind and did not go toe to toe with the 25 year-old Rhino as I remembered beneath the green paint was lurking Nightblue Revell colour and scraping this stuff off took me four evenings for Pred #2. So I won´t be doing this again any time soon. Fortunately I have many hobby projects floating around and it is about time to tackle the Shattered Legions although we are taking it slow. In the beginning we will just do the three characters:

- IH Shadrak Meduson.

- DG Vigilator

- WE Champion

In the album is a pic showing off how the aforementioned people taking a bubbly overnight bath as well as their respective Microarts 32mm Pipeworks base as the action will unfold upon the interiors of either starships or space stations:

Update:

The three bases have been finished yesterday. The uneven surface also works as tactical rock substitutes because modern models rely on them. So this feature will come in handy when placing the models. Shadrak is almost finished with the exception of a couple of details and the Vigilator and Champion have been assembled and base-coated. Normally you would assemble a model 100% but when doing a quartered scheme this won´t be possible as you need good access to all body parts.

Update:
Done. The model is squinting while aiming so there was only a single eye to paint. Furthermore Shadrak was depicted in the online trading card game to have black hair which went well with the IH metallic armour. Although for my Shattered Legions project the armour itself was 50% black so I didn´t find it appealing to give him black hair as well. And now enough with the waffling and straight to the pics:

Update:

Bad news:

After finishing the three characters I will run out of Micro Arts Pipeworks 32mm bases which will be soon though they have already been ordered for the 20-man Tac squad. I hope the stuff arrives at the beginning of December.

Good news:

The WE Champion has been finished. At first I wanted to give all WE models in this warband a blood splatter effect but I got cold feet in the end. I need to practice the blood splatter effect first and then maybe I will apply it to those models in question, if it looks good. The Champion has a deactivated power sword that´s why it isn´t painted in a glowing blue colour. And a blue power sword would look rubbish on him anyway because part of his armour is blue. Therefore it may be prudent to give WE characters in this warband power weapons which are often painted without glows such as power fists. Anyway, enough with the waffling:
