Quick summary of @Chapter Master Valrak's latest video - believe what I've written is accurate, but he can clarify if needed.

Summary of the alleged rumours above;

Total War: Warhammer 40,000

  • preview show from Creative Assembly in December
  • has associates that have tested the game; no finer gameplay details to share
  • Space Marines, Eldar, Chaos and Orks; more to come in the future
  • map system is a global / grand campaign, "on a much bigger scale"

Dawn of War IV

  • hearing more whispers about it; due to be revealed at Gamescon
  • unclear if the reveal will be CGI or gameplay
  • developer is KING Art Games (developer of Iron Harvest); no association with Relic

New Warhammer 40,000 Game

  • has heard a mass-tank focused game is coming
  • developed by Gaijin

Interested to see how they work out a TW40k, the tank game I'd be interested in as well though again not sure how that's going to work if it's War Thunder/Enlisted-esq.

i just hope DOW: IV will stay the warp away from any MOBA influence. Third already was total disaster...

DoW4 just needs to be CoH but with a 40k skin, and melee combat. CoH3 has some issues but would be a solid base for a new DoW, though I hope they tone back the skins/shop elements of it that appeared in CoH2.

If there were a super dedicated team, a 40k MOBA would probably be fun at least. However, I've found they get too bloated or unbalanced.

Also the last thing I want to deal with is LoL players. That's the only fan base I don't want anywhere near 40k.

wasn´t nexus arena, already a failed 40K moba?

Yeah I think 40k as a setting would really suit a proper MOBA, it would just have to be a dedicated game in that style, not the weird RTS-with-MOBA-influence mashup that DoWIII felt like. I guess the problem is finding an audience in a genre dominated by two very big games; even Blizzard couldn't get Heroes of the Storm to stick (despite it being much, much more fun than LoL or DOTA, in my opinion)

Valrak clarified in the comments of that video that the company developing the tank game is Wargaming (World of Tanks), not Gaijin (War Thunder)

No one remembers Dark Nexus? That was supposed to be a 40K MOBA in the style of LoL but was cancelled

That's killed my interest in that game then. Still a 40k Total War and a return to roots (hopefully) Dawn of War IV would more than make up for that

Honestly, I prefer someone took up the corpse of Eternal Crusade and revived that game, it had a lot of potential but Behaviour just gave up on it

I much prefer the arcade style of WoT than the "you get one shooted and die" approach of WT

Not to mention that Wargaming has already collaborated with GW in both WoT and WoWs so they already have a working relationship

I'm honestly not sure on whether I'd rather Gaijin or Wargaming do a 40K tank game. WoT has the fun, arcadey gameplay and is definitely easier to get into, and Galaxy of Tanks would probably be something I'd be better at (I am dreadful at most video games...) but I won't lie the idea of a fully simulationist War Thunder 40K where you have absurd levels of detail (both aesthetic and gameplay-mechanical) and a huge amount of variants, weapon options etc combined with air support would be absolutely something I'd give a try even if I sucked at it. I could see the thing being like if the Imperial Armour volumes of yore got made into a video game. Plus, being entirely fictional there'd be less of an issue with historical accuracy compared to real vehicles, and people would be arguing over the depictions by citing old Codices rather than classified documents!

TW:WH40K is an interesting concept, though I've never been very good at Total War (I have the TW:WH series but I can never really get into them, managing all those blocks of infantry just overwhelms me) and the sheer scale of the average TW game seems like it wouldn't really gel well with 40K, but I could be wrong.

If DoW 4 is more like the first two games and less like whatever the hell was going on with the third one, I could well be interested. I'd be intrigued to see if they basically use the same gameplay style as 1 or 2, or if they try something completely different. I won't lie, I wouldn't mind a hybrid between DoW and TW; the smaller unit counts and closer-quarters gameplay of the former, but without the base-building and unit production side, instead having a TW style "pick your army and then deploy" system (with some options for reinforcements, reserves etc). I think that'd make for the best translation from the tabletop to computers, and also would make it feel more like its own game rather than just DoW 1 or 2 with higher polycount.

As for the MOBA discussion, whilst I personally hate most MOBAs, I could almost see one set in the Eye of Terror fought purely between different Chaos minions (mortal and daemon) for the favour of the Gods being pretty fun and actually quite thematic. Plus, warp shenanigans means you can justify a lot more of the gamey nonsense MOBAS entail as, well, warp shenanigans. Personally I'd prefer it if you could make your own character, customize their appearance and select their abilities and weapons, and I'd also rather they went with Smite-style third-person action controls rather than the "RTS but you're only controlling one unit" style of LOL/DOTA, though the latter is more a subjective thing.

...Of course, what we'd actually get is a generic LoL clone with various named characters backflipping around a generic arena. Blech.

Total War 40K could be the last game I ever play...

Because the lore will make you end it all? Me too buddy. Me too.

“oh no Planet X is being invaded by Orks and Eldar and world eaters and death guard and thousand sons and dark eldar and the imperial guard and the traitor guard and now the Tau are here uh oh the Votann and Kroot have shown up”

Total microtransaction clown show and has shown how bad the trashware games have impacted the future of Warhammer video games.
