So many of the 40k rpgs have rules for designing your own Chapter, Guard Regiment and the like.  I thought it would be interesting to see what things people have built.  They may also prove useful to others in their own campaigns.

I'll admit it's not something I've personally done, usually going for 'that'll do' stablocks, but I will say doing prep for Spectre has given me an interest in creating something for the Armageddon Ork Hunters.

Here is an example I did this weekend using the chapter creation section of Rites of Battle.  With me adding a bunch of detail in the "tying everything together" portion

New Marine Chapter - Guardian Sons

Origins
Why was the Chapter Founded? - Anti-Xenos, particularly Necrons

When was the Chapter Founded? - 23rd Founding early M38

Geneseed
How Pure is the Chapter’s Geneseed? - A new Generation of Imperial Fists

Codex Demenour
No Mercy, No Respite

Geneseed Deficiencies
Standard Imperial Fist issues

Characteristic Modifiers
As befits Sons of Dorn, this chapter gains +5 BS and +5 WP

Figures of Legend
Founding Chapter Master, a Captain of the Imperial Fists tasked with a small cadre of veterans to lead the new chapter.

Homeworld
Hive World - As a chapter raised to fight high-tech Xenos, it needs members who have at least some understanding of tech.

Desert terrain - the high heat makes the planet inhospitable outside of the hives.

Rulership - Stewardship

Organization
Codex Compliant

Combat Doctrine
 Shock and Awe

Solo Mode - Siege Master

Squad Attack Pattern - Tactical Finesse

Squad Defensive Pattern - Swift Advance

Special equipment
Rare Weaponry - Plasma
Heavily armoured Xenos need heavy firepower to take down.  Since becoming more focused on Necrons, the chapter has made a pact with a nearby forge world to ensure a supply of plasma weapons.

Beliefs
Revere the Primarch

Current Status
Under-Strength The chapter has been pushed hard in recent years and is currently about about 70% even with a large number of scout squads.

Friends and Foes
Friends
Local Forge World - pacts of alliance and support
Rogue Trader Dynasty - Chapter has supplied kill team size forces to support the Dynasty in exchange for maps and getting the rogue trader to scout worlds of interest
Enemies
Local Necron Dynasty - Agdagath Dynasty

Heraldry
A black horizontal sword.  Armour is Dark blue and black, quartered with red accents.

Chapter Advances
Death from Afar

Tying it All Together
So we have a successor chapter of the Imperial Fists.  They are based in the far south of Segmentum Tempestus and only a few millenia old, founding during the 23rd founding in early M38.

The Guardian Sons were raised to strengthen Imperial forces in the area against the violent and dangerous Xenos in the area, including the Agdagath Dynasty of Necrons.

The chapter was granted the Hive World of Phrastor III as their home world.  A primarily desert planet with great hives that support promethium mining and rare crystal extraction.

The chapter has developed a reputation for shock and awe tactics designed to overwhelm their foes with massed firepower.  Thus outside rare situations like their support to the Rogue Traders of House Venesh, they usually operate as reinforced battle companies, aboard a strike cruiser supported by several frigates or destroyers.  Their chapter fleet currently lacks a battle barge and only has 6 strike cruisers.  At present they are able to maintain two such forces in the field with a third refitting at their homeworld.

Because of their ties to the local forgeworld, they have a significant amount of plasma weaponry.  They currently have between 30 and 40 terminator suits.  Veterans not in terminator armour are usually fielded as sternguard squads.

According to their doctrine the 6th company and at least one assault squad per battle company are normally equipped with bikes along with about half their scout squads.  Normally the bike component of a strike force is supported by several Land Speeders.  Scouts not on bikes are often transported in land speeder storms.

Armoured support is nearly always available, usually predators.  Every battle company is assigned a Land Raider.

The population of their homeworld is not particularly psychically active and their librarius is smaller than average.  Thus some record keeping tasks that are normally the responsibility of the librarius have fallen to the chaplains to maintain.

There have been rumours in recent years that the chapter has managed to implant geneseed in a blank they found on their homeworld that was a suitable candidate for implantation.  Others claim that the chapter has recently made contact with a Sisters of Silence fortress hidden away in the fringes of Segmentum Tempestus and thus can call on small squads of such warriors.

Some among the Inquisition have worried that it is tied to heavily to other local organizations and that if the Guardian Sons were to fall, they would drag much of the local sector with them.

Maybe a simple option would be to copy the Crimson Fists rules from RoB? They get a cut down version of the 'Hunter of Aliens' Talent that only works against Orks. (Only really useful for CC characters... though I suppose against Orks there is a fair chance of everyone ending up in CC at some point...)
