Just back from my first GT with new Codex

It’s been a long while since I’ve posted but thought I’d pop in to say hi.

Played this past weekend with the new Codex and had a blast.

while Stormlance is my usual goto, I had to give Beast Slayer a spin.

i only went 2-3 but had an absolute blast and did manage to win the Best Painted Award! The event was Summer Slaughter in Piscataway NJ run by the Wicked Dice crew.

Game 1 was a loss against Orcs

This was also my first event with the new mission pack, mostly I like the game play, but challenger cards are more often than not a huge problem.  My play style is to go hard early and then try to keep the lead, late game armies seem to really be able to capitalize on this and on average I’m playing at what feels like a 6-9 point handicap.  
Old timers will notice I still field some bikes even if TWC has taken center stage last few years.  I’ve also been messing with Drop Pods again.  I don’t care what anyone says 10 GreyHunters in a Pod with a Battle Leader puts in work.

tweaks are being made for my next event in October, hopefully I can bring myself to post a bit more.

Sorry this ran long winded without much being said.

oh, I did paint a new unit for this event even if it was a bit of a rush job

Honestly I would have been disappointed if you didn't take any bikes. Would be like if something unique in the universe died.

I don't think they're a bad unit if you have a job for them to do. An ATV with a multi melta might be nice in beastslayer.

 

Glad the grey hunters felt good. Tell us more about how you used them please. Will motivate me to assemble that second squad on the sprue.

How did the Venerable Dread perform? I'm planning on having two in my list purely because Dreads with a weapon and shield look damn awesome.

The Grey Hunters are in the Drop Pods each with a Wolfguard Battle.  They were good at assisting in quite a few roles but where they seemed to excel was when assaulting an objective.  In my last game against Blood Angels I dropped in on opposite sides of an objective with Lemartes and 10 Death Co.  they were oathed, I unleashed 60 bolter shots rerolling hits, lethal and sustained rerolling wounds.  Was a devastating blow leaving just 4 Death Company and the Chappy.

Now I know there are better unit choices, but they feel right to me.

the Dreads are OK, they are a bit high in points I think but I play rule of cool so like to take them, they are fragile so the form a 2nd wave following up behind the TWC

I am surprised there wasn't a bit more of the character-fu in your list. I do see a lot of lists that juggle around units, but one thing that stays consistent is the characters (named and otherwise) seem to be heavily represented.

 

Personally over the past 20+ years I cannot seem to get over my love of terminators. So I completely understand sticking to your favourites and riding with them even when it's not necessarily 'meta' to do so.

 

I'm glad you're liking the Grey Hunters. Personally I'm using 1 squad, and a 1 squad of Bloodclaws. I wonder if your trick with the Battle Leader would work with two squads of pistol wielding Bloodclaws? (I do like their advance/charge.)

 

So would you stick to Beast Slayer? Or consider another detachment? (Personally I will not play Gladius with this army.)

I was using Stormlance until they changed the Sagas, then I was using Warrior Born.  I have Battle For Salvation in October, going to stick with Beast Slayer for that one.
