EuroHobbes
Brother Tyler sent me an approval this afternoon and I logged in form the first time. My first Space marine was somewhere around 1992, it was built and painted by my brother who was (and is) heavily into model building (airplanes, cars, etc.). My parents were adamant that warhammer wasn't the hobby for me. Disappointing at the time, perfectly understandable in hindsight. So fast forward three decades, 200+ board games, and 5 shelves of dungeons and dragons books and I had the urge to try painting a Space marine myself. I had seen the starter sets last year and I was intrigued, but a bit overwhelmed by the size of the game..then I saw the kill team starter set and read up on it. Two months later and my Angels of death are painted, two plague marines are done and tomorrow I'll prime the other 5. I told myself that I'd paint the starter set before I bought any more models so we'll just ignore the Legionaries, Night Lords and Hivestorm box that are on my desk, shall we? The painting part is a blast and I'm extremely happy with my results so far. I was looking for a forum to discuss building and painting. I'm trying discord, but that format doesn't click with me. So I'll try adding to the community and hope to get some tips on my painting! Shard of Magnus
Welcome to the B&C! The Forge forums are a good place for a lot of what you’re looking for. Modeling and painting also gets covered in the specific faction and game forums. If there’s a specific painting project you’re wanting to g to discuss then you may find a different interested audience in the faction forums. Also, how old were you when your parents told you that warhammer wasn't for you? I'm curious. Ha! I guess I first got into Warhammer when I was 12 or 13. And my parents didn’t do anything to stop me - beyond maintaining an air of mild distain about it. I guess they saw me working to pay for it at least. I realised I had to try harder with my son to keep him from the addiction. I kept all my Warhammer secret from him, locked away in forbidden cupboards, and would avoid the shop in town. It didn’t work, he got invited to a birthday party that turned out to be a Warhammer painting party and came back saying “Dad, you won’t believe what I’ve discovered, there’s these amazing models and it’s called Warhammer and we have to get some!” He was about 10 maybe? hauteclere 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/386609-hi-there/#findComment-6130244 Share on other sites
StratoKhan
Welcome! Better late than never to smart the hobby :) Sometimes I think about the wealth and breadth of hobby resources that I didn’t have when I started out and I feel pretty good about how newcomers to the hobby get supported. there’s painting tutorial videos, battle reports, fanzines, kickstarters, so much great stuff. Hope you can find some of that support at BnC as well, I also don’t love the Discord communities and find this place more helpful. Discord is fine but too many updates become really overwhelming especially if the community is too big. EuroHobbes
Thank you so much for the welcoming messages! I'll try to add some pictures: I painted this one first. It's the space marine you get with the 'getting started with 40k' booklet. I didn't have a drill yet.. This is one of the Kill Team starter set space marines. I'm really happy that I got the eye lense like I wanted. As you can see edge highlighting is still witchcraft to me. One of the plague marines. There is so much details on these miniatures compared to the space marines, I keep turning and twisting the model to find out that I forgot to paint a part. This is the first time that I took pictures of something this small (I usually do landscape photography) so that's another part of the hobby that I get to sink my teeth in. Also, how old were you when your parents told you that warhammer wasn't for you? I'm curious. I must have been around 11 or 12. Now: this wasn't a case of my parents holding me back. This was a completely rational decision as a parent to make for a kid with motor skills of a dumptruck and the attention span of a hummingbird. They were very supportive of other hobbies like guitar and electronic music (hobbies I still practice to this day). So it was more a "you'll probably have just as much fun with this other stuff" than "you can't have fun". And honestly: the information you can get on youtube and places like this (as @StratoKhan mentioned) is so completely different than in the late nineties. So I am more than content with the 'better late than never'! WBRBloom
Welcome onboard @EuroHobbes! More of a modelled than a player myself and I have to say, if these are your first miniatures, they look amazing! Better late than never, right?
