I'm a little surprised I haven't seen this posted yet. (Unless I missed it!)

I've stolen this from Youtube just to get a summary for anyone that missed it:

image.png.2205721fec64b4f70b6582e2d0fb2f5e.png

So first off I'm just going to say in my 'fun' list... that is to say not hyper competitive, I was running 3 TWC, Ragnar, and Arjac.

This puts my fun list at + 35. Which I'm just going to say aside from Ragnar isn't making a lot of sense. I never felt my use of TWC was anything much beyond 'fluffy for Wolves". They were/are solid, and they kind of fit that niche of being a good army specific unit that was well priced. I guess people were mowing down opposition with multiple large squads. I wasn't doing this.

I think Arjac is a miss. And I think they missed the opportunity to do something useful to Njal who probably remains the least used named character and is left that way after this update.

The larger picture sees the Ballistus, and a few other units take a hit that probably sway people back to cheaper, alternatives.

Just wondering what this has meant (if anything) to your lists?

My apologies if I sound too negative. It is not my intent. In 3 months we can be looking at a different situation.

I was disappointed but not surprised by the points update. I do see the reasoning in increasing TWC. I like to use two units of 3. (+30). Arjac and Ragnar got increases because people like using them? Khârn is similar to Ragnar and is the same points now. What mostly disappointed me the most was the increase to Ballistus dreadnoughts. I like to use two (+20). All of my lists start with 2 Ballistus and 2 small TWC units lol. The blood claws going up was a head scratcher. I'll have to take either a character or transport out. Many comp lists forgo transports so I may see if I can make that work.

I'm surprised we didn't get decreases to grey hunters, all the dreadnoughts minus Bjorn, and Njal. Most armies got point decreases or at least a mix of decreases & increases. Ad Mech had two units go up, blood angels had 1 unit go up.

I am pleased they opened up Logan's ability to any reserve unit. And they clarified to count units in transports for beastslayer tally.

Back to the drawing board on lists.

 I agree with your take. I don't think it's negative... it's basically facts. :)

GW updated their app for ios yesterday and I reloaded my lists. I agree with you about Khârn being about the equivalent of Ragnar (though I can perceive of a list without Ragnar, but not without Khârn). Regardless, here's the part that gets me:

All my Wolves 2K lists loaded up to about 2035 (give or take)

All my World Eaters 2K lists loaded up to about 1975 (give or take).

That doesn't seem right. My 8bound/X8bound just got very spicy. The rest got better except Spawn which were incredibly good/utilitarian.

Wolves? Not only did the core Wolves units largely get hit, but all the auxiliary units did too. This is tough to swallow on top of (as you note) stuff like Grey Hunters didn't get a rules or points tweak - which let's be honest do not even make an appearance on top tables. This is flat wrong in my opinion.

I use one squad of Grey Hunters just because it feels wrong to pull them out but they are definitely bringing down the competitive level of my lists... this is multiplied by being forced into 10.

Funny thing is part of the reason I took Ballistus is for the foot print. A lot of tables are ugly in 10th... tons of little boxes on the table. I like the extra room in my zone. I stopped taking the Redemptors... I have to figure something out here... the point increase threatens to make my lists a little too small now.  I like my Termies/elite units.

I can see I may have to just cut headtakers to keep Termies, or vice versa, but both seem to be asking a bit much.

It will be interesting to see what happens to our termies when the Assault variant get added to the vanilla codex along side their superior Oath. Maybe points come down for Wolves at that point?

Overall this is rough. I'm thinking of bringing back vanilla marine units that I don't want to... scouts, intercessors... dump grey hunters and some elite units. Not sure yet.

Edited by Prot

I agree about Grey Hunters, especially because Intercessors are in a good place at the moment. 4-shots each, Sticky Objective and 16ppm for a 5 man squad is hard to top and I nearly always take 1-2 squads of them. For that price I could only take 1 squad of grey Hunters who get worse firepower and no ObjeSec. Granted they are better in melee but.....

Better in melee.... lol. Yea but they're still carrying toothpicks and in almost any case you know you're not relying on them for anything critical in melee.

I think the Grey Hunter problem is a big issue. Points, sizing, function and rules. You just said it really, the common intercessor has a real role.

Every time I make a list I want to pull the Grey Hunters. In my last... 6 games (?) give or take, they have been really disappointing.  Bloodclaws are understandably a one shot, one and done, blunt object that might get some work done... pretty much as intended. But Grey Hunters are in a terrible spot. (So is Njal.)

Maybe next time?

Space Wolves have come out swinging, so we’ve brought up a few points on the overperforming units.

Not too thrilled about this explanation from GW. We’ve come out with at 52% win percent and they treated us worse than most. Small changes albeit but my lists are losing at least a unit.

Agree on Ragnar. He hasn’t yet made it into my lists but I start all my WE lists with Khârn. Khârn is better too by a large margin. 3 damage is so good.

Grey Hunters at 155 or less is where they should be. The restriction of units of 10 is  an impediment. Their Datasheet lacking a second special close combat weapon is lame. It’s in the box.

If we got discounts on some units I would be more understanding of their approach. Instead it reinforces the idea that we are not allowed to have nice things. Just boltguns lol

Come out swinging....

Well they've hardly been out. We could say Thousand Sons took substantial nerfs in points... but some of those units were incredible and you were seeing 3 in many lists of certain units.

I think one thing that is just not being addressed (other than Grey Hunters) is the Detachments. I'm personally sick of every single marine player (no matter the chapter) just trying to min-max the Gladius.

I know GW tried a subtle 'nerf' to other chapters by removing the +1 to wound of Oath, however this is a very strong indicator that it doesn't matter. Fix Sagas.

I think World Eaters will pick up a LOT of competitive band wagoneers! I think some of those may be Wolves players. If I were GW, I certainly would have waited a bit longer after Knight nerfs. (Wolves had some unique ways of dealing with them.)

Anyway, I just came on to say I've reworked some of my lists. Basically this has forced me to pull the fun/fat out of the lists (except Grey Hunters because I'm super stubborn, and they're painted!)

Back to multi-Headtakers , Predators, multi WGBL. Gone is Arjac, extra Termies, Ragnar, Iron Priest, and Ballistus from all lists.

The blood claw nerf really upset me.  I was just about to start testing beastslayer lists with multiple bricks of 20xBCs

Instead I have come full circle with my space wolf choices.

There was a while we expected vindicators to be nerfed and jumped to alternatives in advance.  The expected change did not happen so I'm back on the vindicator train.

I just entered the following list in an online GT:

YES!!! The phobos Wolfcaptain is back! Not that I want to discourage you, quite the contrary in fact, but why not go with 3 x Incursors and some Intercessors instead of the Eliminators? I love the Elims, but it feels like they're outclassed by a lot of the Phobos alternatives and a Sticky Objective unit always helps.

The 3 man headtakers do melee trades

The eliminators do shooting trades and hopefully chip in free damage...they are also bait to bring units to midfield in range of my wulfen

Purge on map 8...scary b/c I have so much chaff but it worked out.

My opponent started the game with 1 brick of plague marines in SR

On top of turn 2 I used logans ability to bring in hunting wolves in his back left corner 1 turn early and zone out space...he decided not to rapid ingress the brick on his turn b/c he would be stuck in the back far away from any action.  I gave up an easy kill but he moved his bloat drone back to kill my wolves which is what I wanted and forced him to leave his unit in reserve.

I was also able to remove his myphitic blight haulers this round with shooting and a kamikaze wulfen charge.

Bottom of 2 he killed my forward elements and crippled the wulfen unit but didn't kill it.  He once again kept his brick in reserves.

Top of turn 3 I went yolo and shoved everything forward.  I auto passed morale with the 4 Wulfen who survived being charged by plague marines in the top left and fell back over the wall and zoned out the top left.  Wulfen midboard got a 12" advance and zoomed to the right side rhino and zoned out most of the right side.  Logan and a headtaker unit completed the box out.

*This auto killed his brick of plague marines in reserve b/c they had nowhere to deploy bottom of turn 3.

Wulfen easily kill the rhino on right and he loses any chance at killing vindicators without full reroll plague marines who are forced to bail out (the other rhino in mid is empty at this stage of the game)

Vindicators unload on plague marines in the open and cripple his remaining units

He conceded bottom of turn 3.

Vindicators are back on the menu baby!!!

I see. Well I love that Phobos units are an important piece of your strategy. I think I'll try something similar with Shadowmark with less melee and more focus on shooting to kill units and some melee punch to support.

Are you planning to use the Phobos Lt as a scoring piece on his own or is he joining the Incursors most of the time?

Phobos LT always goes with incursors so they can shoot and scoot and stay alive throughout the game

Vindicators hitting on 2 means I can shoot something without oath and still feel comfortable...that lets me shift targets if vindicator 1 one shots my oath target or it lets me put oath on a melee target

I played a variant of this list in Shadowmark Talon. I was pleasantly surprised by the Eliminators utility throughout the game. They killed a Chimera turn 1 and chipped some damage here and there. Otherwise they were just annoying for my opponent to get rid off and allowed the rest of the list to do it's job.

Definitely a concept to continue experimenting with!

To this thread late after seeing our updates after getting back off holiday/tour this week. Seems like unnecessary nerfs and no attention given to units that need it (GH are expensive but still an autoinclude for me for fluff reasons, and our terminators could really do with having a non-named character option to go with them)

I think until we see 11th edition hopefully remove all access to the main codex detachments for BA/SW/DA akin to what they've done with templars, this is going to continue to be an issue in balancing. I must be the only person I know running hunter, and I continue to get stares of incomprehension when I explain to people in my gaming group that I refuse to run Gladius with my wolves - nerfing several units within 2 months of our codex being out, based on 52% win rate data from people almost certainly not running 2 of our codex detachments seems pretty harsh.

How have you been getting on with multi WGBL, Im thinking of writing up a list for a game later this week that uses zero named characters and seeing how I get on (as fed up with half the SW command turning up to every skirmish - realise this is just kinda how 10th is now, but I miss the days of just running my own wolf lords/priests etc).

My SW list discussed above went 3-1 and got 3rd place
Round 1 DG (win)
Round 2 DG (win)
Round 3 DG (loss) (I :cuss:ed up on top of 3 and didn't advance my infiltrator bubble far enough...gave him long charges with his DeathShroud terminators on other units and he freaking landed them....uggg)
Round 4 CSM (win)

Not a meta power list but it definitely has the tools to compete

Next SW list I test is a meme list b/c I was dared...

List name-Yo dawg I heard you like wolves

60 wulfen (both versions all with frag auto launchers)

3 wolf priests

18 head takers (2 shields 1 with paired weapons)

3x5 fenrisian wolves

Wish me luck!

Okay I suppose. To be honest I think the Wolves codex is just really great with characters.... named or generic, their characters are great. Admittedly I think my list became kind of boring.

I took a little break from Wolves as my lists were looking all the same. My lists got too elite, and too many characters, so I went the opposite way as mentioned and it worked fine, just a little boring. I guess I'm a sucker for characters!

It sucked but it was also great training for the meta

The top priority is avoiding the gdamn DSTs and staying alive until they drop

The key to that is sending out cheap wolves to screen on turns 2 and 3 and having your infiltrators in a great position as well.

Mid terrain for infiltrators is the best then the wolves just run up the flanks and their 6" bubbles meet with the infiltrators and screen everything.

The big key to remember (which I forgot in game 3) is on turn 3 you need to yolo the infiltrators into the open and zone out as much space as possible

I forgot like a knuckle head and had them doing the fixed objective ESTABLISH LOCUS so I walked them forward and did the action instead of advancing and saying yolo to zone out as much space as possible

The worst part of all this is the game usually ends up being low scoring while you turtle up so you have to win every game or you lose any possible final podium placing

I scored 100 / 71 / 50 in my 3 DG games

I was 7 points away from being in 2nd place...all made possible by the 100 point game 1 where I forced a surrender turn 3 basically
