sarabando
when i saw the price of a box of troops(berserkers) hit £40 i knew it wasnt long for me. i dont mind getting the big boxes as im happy to budget for a larger box and spend longer doing it but they are now harder to get and even they are getting out of hand. Frogian
for me selling off stuff i don't want has massively brought down what i've spent overall, as well as trying to pick stuff up 2nd hand i've got half my kill teams from the double boxes where i've sold off one of them. its been a good way to get the ones i want cheap, as well as the rules/tokens/terrain. selling my plague marines and necrons also got me back what i paid for DI and Indomtius. I'll sell my tyranids at some point and get back a big chunk of the cost of leviathan (95% of my space marines are from a new edition set or hachette mags). when i got back into necromunda i managed to get a copy of Ash Wastes off facebook for £125, sold the terrain and the nomads on for basically what i paid - i think it ended up working out as £10 for the orlock basic gang + the orlock vehicles + the templates/dice/rules. i think that was less than what the necromunda dice cost. i've not played AoS yet, but i've got some slyvanth and goblins, and again - all from hachette (or facebook/ebay buys of people selling hachette stuff) i really try to avoid just buying regular boxes of single units as much as possible, and just not keep stuff that i'm not really bothered about. I'm a decent painter- nothing amazing, but I have been in the hobby for 30 years. Occasionally I will sell a unit or two, and they will cover the price of my purchases. For example, I used to have 3 Redemptor Dreadnought. I sold one of them and an infantry squad that I felt was redundant in my collection and was able to buy the Leviathan set at the start of 10th with the money I made. Doghouse
For me it's a value thing. I stopped buying because I no longer feel that I am getting value for my money or investment in time with the newer kits, whether it's expense or the shear amount of time I have to spend making a model only to be heavily steered to making them how GW want me to. I've shifted more into the 3d printing world and expanded my horizons beyond what GW currently offer so I've outgrown their products I guess which further makes their prices seem distasteful to me. Instead I am quite happily sat creating my own little game system and miniatures from scratch which has been very rewarding and allowed me to get back to what I consider to be the true roots of wargaming as a hobby over what has become an overly priced competitive tabletop game to me. I think that you can get some decent deals from box splitting as some have mentioned but I really do not want to become a reseller in order to make back money that I feel I should not be paying in the first place. I'd much rather feed my imagination than fill their coffers. Xenith
They haven't priced me out completely, and most things with a 20% discount I will still buy, however clear red lines for me, in terms of things I will not buy are: £24 single miniatures unless special characters £14-18 single troop miniatures like death guard icon bearer or champion. Any unit at over £12 a model from forge world - suzerians, crimson paladins Lerneans, etc at £75 for 5 models are insanely priced. I aaaalmost once bought a set of angels tears at £58 for 5, and maybe if i liked the models more I would have, but they're ugly, and now out of scale. The kratos at £85 is too much. I did buy one at £75 with a 20% discount on top. Viridia
I suppose priced out for me is all the editions throughout the years. When I first got my grubby little hands on Ultramarines at the age of seven, 3rd edition had only been out for about a year, I think? Since then we've had seven further main edition rulebooks, the same again for each of the factions (in most cases - farewell my beloved Codex Catachan Jungle Fighters!), units have been added and nerfed, units removed wholesale, or moved to different armies (perhaps more a WFB issue, but still) It is a luxury hobby, that is right, but when I look at something like Rapid Fire, who are now on their 3rd or due to be releasing a 3rd edition after going since 1994, it's frustrating to realise that I can get more bang for my buck by focusing on historical gaming (my British infantry company or German panzers for Flames of War can be used for tons of different games) or finding a group that focuses on one version of 40k, in this case I'm choosing to stick with 1st edition Age of Darkness. At least then I know there's not really a zeitgeist to chase, I can just build, paint and play as I wish. Also inflation can suck it when it comes to the price of a basic box of infantry. Bloody extortionate prices these days! Orion
I haven't been by prices, but I have been significantly lessened by Forge World being killed off. I don't want recasts, I don't want ebay prices, and I don't want a lot of plastic kits. On a side note, the game is 6ft under to me as of the start of 10th.
