For instance, I know I want a chunk of Infernus Marines. They are all push fit, so I know I can't use the shoulderpads I want, so I'm going to have to use 3rd party emblems to stick on. I've had to incorporate the price of those into the army.

With some judicious use of clippers and a file, push-fit models will take a new pad.

Here's some push-fits with upgrade shoulder pads, an Intercessor and Aggressors,

Nice. I didn't think of chopping them down.

I guess that would make it possible to convert them.

Thanks.

I've found it easiet to do with the model assembled, without the powerpack attached (sprue-goo as a gap-fill is nice, but not absolutely necessary)

Well, not priced out really, but I have been buying less and less due to the state of the 40k rules. I can't bring myself to play the official rules anymore (can't stand IGOUGO anymore, also 40k is a lot too deadly, which in turn leads to other issues like table layouts; the unfinished rules that need erratas; the fact you can't do much besides "kill kill kill"), and currently I don't know if I can get the locals to play OPR, so I completely stopped build & painting and therefore buying.

There's a big Bolt Action community here. If my test games of Bolt Action turn out to be fun, my 40k stuff will definitely be mothballed until GW improves the experience or people here are willing to play OPR.

I think the problem for a lot of people is that they impulse buy stuff and it sits in it's box for months or is never touched which is what reduces the value for money. The trick is to get off the product treadmill then evaluate whether you are getting the bang for your buck.

I personally think it's easier to justify the cost if you are painting, building or playing on a regular basis rather than having it sat gathering dust.

Right now I am working on building everything I currently have and putting together a 4th edition army.

I think the normalization of the pile of shame though has become a detriment to the hobby in this regard to value.

People should also think about setting themselves boundaries for their projects. For example my aim for HH 2.0 was to collect an Iron Hands force which was mechanized and had enough dreadnoughts to create also a "March of the Ancients" list. That´s it. Nothing more, nothing less. This means the force is about 90% finished and there won´t be added anything later. Compulsively buying stuff never ends well.

I been pondering this topic for a bit, and here is my 2 cents

I have less been priced out (even though I had sticker shock with the new Deathwatch kill team, 5 models for $80), and more I have better things to do with my time / I have enough of a collection.  When I first started this game, I was completely GW only.  After trying a few games (and frankly growing up from my teenage years), I found much more joy in playing other games (Battletech, Blkout, Turnip28, etc) or just painting models I like.

I been going to more skirmish base games, then army games (which does help the wallet).  With how life is going, I have less time (working multiple jobs, and owning a small business), which does not help having to paint hundreds of models (I love horde armies).  At this point, I rather just focus on smaller projects, than multiple massive 10,000 pt armies project for a game I actually do not like or have time to play anymore, nor want to read about (I still like to paint atleast).

Final and main point, I think I am just getting old and Jaded (which is bad for my twenties).  I rarely get excited anymore (Grand Cathay was a rare exception), and buying more things in my life makes me depress and sick.

TLDR:  Instead of collecting everything, I been focusing on a few projects that I care for deeply.

I think the new Warhammer Quest might be too expensive. I need to learn more about the rules and game itself.

If it's as good as Blackstone Fortress or Silver Tower, I will happily pay the asking price.

I am a big fan of Blackstone, carefully collected every last expansion, white dwarf extras, etc. Naturally, another quest will grab my interest. However, with that price tag, and seemingly plenty of stock(not sold out yet), and an oversaturation of hobby/games to do, I could happily wait for a sale later on in 2026 before potentially grabbing it. Even if this was a FOMO release, I'd probably be ok with missing out.
