I've been a long time 40K player, but overall been kind of dissatisfied with the way it's been going since 8th Ed came out and oversimplified it. As I look to HH, I see a lot of commonalities (at least on the surface) to the gameplay I was accustomed to in earlier editions. I know it's not the same, but either way, here it goes.

Started working on IF mostly due to the fact I play BT in 40K. So far, I have Dorn, Sigismund, about 20 or so Tactical Marines, 10 Cataphractii Terminators, a Veteran Squad (Sternguard Vets I plan to kitbash into something at least), Leviathan Siege Dread (Ranged Variant), Sicaran Battle tank and 2 Sicaran Tank hunters with only Sigismund and the Dread being assembled (Dorn is in sub-assemblies for future painting).

So, as I am completely new to this version of the game, I'm looking for advice on where to go from where I sit right now. My plan is to attempt to create this army in a sort of SoT setting. Any advice on either the gameplay or units that would be beneficial to acquire in the future would be most welcome.

Hey, welcome! I'm not an expert on the rules or tactics, but I suggest you familiarise yourself with list building in 3rd edition so you get an idea of where to go next since list building is quite different from previous editions.

Model Wise you have about 2000 points but the way itis built you are short a lot of HQs and the list is illegal. A Centurion and a few other Command models to allow you to unlock other Detachments to make it legal.  But here is a basic breakdown for your units.

  1. Dorn is Dorn
  2. Sigs can be run as a "Praetor" or as Sigs
  3. 20 tactical marines leave as 2 10 man units
  4. Cataphractii 2 5 man units. IF can take storm shields
  5. Vets/ Sternguard take them as Seekers
  6. Levi as he is
  7. Sicarans leave
  8. Sicarans Venerators leave as is

I would build a generic Praetor, Centurion, Champion, and Master of Signals for my HQs

I would add Phalanx Warders, Assault Squads, breachers (when they get released) and gun platforms (Araknae Quad Accelerator Platform and Rapier quad heavy bolters)

I do have New Recruit, and have been trying to use it to legally kit out my Sicarans, but I have to admit a serious lack of knowledge in how either 2nd or 3rd ED work at all. Youtube vids just leave me even more confused. I know I have to build out my force more. Just looking for advice.

In terms of building on your existing force: You probably want some Rhinos to get those tacticals from a to b. You probably also need transport options for your terminators so land raiders or a spartan. Most of all you need generic HQs. A Champion is great value and unlocks a Detachment that would allow you to bring the Sternguard Vets (as either Veteran Tacticals or Seekers), A unit of Terminators (Cataphractii Command Squad) and a transport for said terminators.

I'd try to play a few games without special characters at first.

I took the liberty of throwing together a quick list. All you'd need in order to field this would be a spartan, two rhinos and an extra guy with a fancy sword and it is build in a way that you can simply add Dorn and swap the Preator for Siggi at larger games.
