Hi all

My daughters want to try painting some little robots like me.

My Eldest is 11 but she is dyspraxic and so any fine brush control is going to be really difficult for her.

I have the Necron half of Indomitus and thought they would be ideal for dry brushing.

Can anyone point me to a good dry-brushing guide for Necons. I feel like i have seen loads but now I want one I can't find one. I don't mind helping her with a few details but I would like it to be predominantly her work so it needs to be mostly dry-brushing and shade.

Dry-brushing isn't really a technique I have used with my Dark Angels but its about time I learned some new tricks

While I may not have a video for you to follow, I can at least describe the process. My recommendation would be to get some round brushes and paint that's designed for drybrushing, though neither are essential. Here's pictures of the style of brush (the three white ones, mine were cheap from Amazon) and silver drybrush paint I use. These pics look huge, I'll attempt to hide them behind spoiler tags.

Step 1: Basecoat black. You could also basecoat silver, wash black, then do the next steps.

Step 2: load up your brush with paint, then almost completely wipe the paint off the bristles onto a paper towel. You don't want much left at all, and if you prime a few bits of sprue/extra bits you can practice on them to get it right. Less is more.

Step 3: pick a direction that goes over edges instead of into them, and start working the brush across the area as if you were Dr. Alan Grant brushing the dirt of a velociraptor fossil. Go slowly, since it's a lot easier to add more than start over.

Once you've done that you're pretty much finished. Optionally,

Step 4: you could then wash with black, or any accent colour that pleases you

Step 5: repeat drybrushing with the same silver as before. This time aiming more for the uppermost areas of the model to create more of a gradient

Step 6: get a brighter silver and very sparingly drybrush around the edges of the model you want to pick out further.

This isn't very Necron of me, but I didn't drybrush the silver on my Necrons. Just a lick of silver and a black wash. On my budding Imperial Knight collection I switched gears due to the size of the models. Here's a picture of the silver I got using the process above through to step 6. The brighter silver was from the same product line as the darker one.
