Beef
Whilst i agree with the Wulfen part i have to add that from a lore point of view as early as 3rd edition the curse of the wulfen was like a defence mechanism. The beast within may recur during stress or battle or more specificly when Chaos taint was around. The beast whithin would stir when chaos was present. Thats not to say it reacted positively like the marine would want to join chaos but more like chaos was an anathema to the beast whithin. So for me whilst i agree that keep the Wulfen in 2 boxes i can also see on the rare occasion current space wolves could fall to the curse. Especially with all the warp shenanigans recently after the last black crusade. Iron Father Ferrum
On 11/22/2025 at 5:42 PM, Jukkiz said: To those in the dark about Iron Hands. could i get a little tid bit from both versions? Sure. The old lore: 1. Each Clan Company has near total independence, and is structured very similarly to a Battle Company with a mix of Battleline, Heavy Support, Close Support, Scout, and Veteran Squads. 2. The Chapter does not have, and never has, a singular leader. During large, multi-Clan operations, one individual wilderness appointed to command, but that authority is brittle and temporary. 3. The Clan Council which runs the Chapter as a whole consists of ten Marines, one representative from each Clan Company. 4. "Iron Father" is not an honorific; it is a specific title given to Marines who are trained in both the roles of a Techmarine and a Chaplain (the Chapter has zero Chaplains as they reject the Imperial Creed & only worship the Emperor as the Omnissiah). 5. Dreadnoughts do not sleep. They are valued and nearly-worshipped as the perfect blend of man & machine. Those not deployed to warzones are usually appointed to the Clan Council. New lore: 1.The Clan Companies all follow the Codex Astartes standard (i.e., 1st Company [Clan Avernii] is all veteran squads). Transfers between Clans are uncommon but do happen. 2. The Chapter routinely selects one member to lead them as Chapter Master. For the last 3 centuries, they've selected the same person as Chapter Master (Kardan Stronos), which completely contradicts the whole point of having temporary leadership - to avoid any single Marine from having complete control of the Chapter. 3. The Clan Council has forty-some-odd members, to include a VOTING MEMBER from the Adeptus Mechanicus. This is a direct violation of Guilliman's Codex reforms that separated the Astartes from all other Imperial institutions. The Steel Confessors Chapter was sent on a penitent crusade and the Mechanicus was censured for a similar influence in command. 4. "Iron Father" is an honorific given to those who serve on the council. Not just Techmarines, but any widely respected Marine can be given the title. 5. Dreadnoughts are treated the same as in other Chapters; kept asleep when not needed for combat. Inquisitor_Lensoven
Lore wise? Idk if I’d change anything specifically on a micro scale; but I wouldn’t be against an alternate timeline where the heresy never happened or as stomped out before it could grow and spread too much. it would be interesting to see how the emperor would deal with the tyranids how the empire itself would be different. That right there is my pick for a ret-retcon (or retcon-con?) as it's completely unnecessary and adds nothing. All it does is restrict the creative space for imagining Tyranid motives and backstory. sitnam, Gorgoff, Inquisitor_Lensoven and 2 others 1 4 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/386796-if-you-could-change-anything-in-the-lore-what-would-you-change/page/11/#findComment-6144238 Share on other sites

That right there is a prime example of why I don't consider BL to be LORE. Lore is printed in game books. BL is hit and miss fanfiction BASED on LORE. And IMHO, this particular piece of fanfic should never have been written, and whoever wrote it should be prevented from writing anything else involving GW IP for the rest of their career. phandaal, Alby the Slayer, sitnam and 3 others 5 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/386796-if-you-could-change-anything-in-the-lore-what-would-you-change/page/11/#findComment-6144331 Share on other sites

You can what have whatever headcanon you want, but Black Library is far from fanfiction. Some of the most important bits of 40k lore have come from BL novels, and a good portion of the fan base (myself amongst that number) got hooked because of Black Library. The game books aren't immune from having incredibly dumb lore either. ThePenitentOne
Yeah, I should walk that back a bit. Not all BL material is created equal- I've even enjoyed some of it myself. I still don't consider it to be LORE, but it was inappropriate to refer to it as fanfic. And yeah, I think you're on the mark with the notion of headcanon too; the body of work is so massive at this point that probably none of us know and incorporate ALL of it into our universes. I'm just experiencing a moment of hobby angst over the outsized role that marines play in the universe and the hobby it's based on. Making the presence of Tyranids in the galaxy dependent upon a war between marines just really pissed me off on top of the whole "Protesting for more Ultramarines" troll video on warcom today. I feel like not only are marines the only thing anyone wants to talk about, but also that my face is being rubbed in it by a tone deaf company that doesn't give a moment's thought to anyone except marine players. It's really impacting my ability to enjoy forums anymore. sitnam and TwinOcted 2 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/386796-if-you-could-change-anything-in-the-lore-what-would-you-change/page/11/#findComment-6144344 Share on other sites

Never forget, there was a time when the 3rd Company of Imperial Fists had more bespoke rules than the Word Bearers, and you can forget anything that wasn't in Power Armour. Its always been the Loyalist Marine show. Oh, and not considering BL 'lore' is wild. The good authors (there are maybe 3, sorry folks) absolutely run circles around GW proper, its not even close, its laughable even. ThePenitentOne
Yeah- I'm aware of B&C history, and the legacy is still strong. I'm glad the site openned up- I wouldn't be here if it hadn't. It does make it a weird choice for a player of less popular factions to seek a sympathetic ear, but I've founf the community here is pretty cool, so every once in a while I'll dare to vent... And sometimes that goes a little farther than it should. But mods here are really on top of things, and I appreciate that. Anyway, sorry to distract in a lore thread.
