So I've been super excited about the Khan on Bike coming out since it was rumoured. I've all but stashed my Scars away, awaiting some sort of buff, or something to make them useful again... I miss their old detachment (I still have their old supplements) but charging head first into Deathguard never really worked anyway!

So then I read this new part:

Quote

The Great Khan, Jubal, was also gravely wounded, having been captured by Huron Blackheart’s forces and subjected to terrible torture. Though the Great Khan still lives, his body is far beyond the arts of even the Chapter’s most accomplished healers to repair. The Apothecaries have, however, managed to maintain his mind. Thus, though unable to take to the field of battle, Jubal Khan continues to lead the Chapter. He has come to rely heavily upon Suboden’s aid in this task, imparting as much of his experience on the Captain as possible before death, or internment within a Dreadnought sarcophagus, finally claims him.

And I was a bit shocked, then I remembered they kind of did the same thing with the Raven Guard/Shrike.

So is Jubal going to still be a valid model? Or does he get removed from the current, competitive rules?

I'm also hoping for an actual new White Scar detachment.

Finally, although hoping for a relic jetbike from ye olden days, I will take the Thunder (thanks to Cawl the space mechanic who never stops giving.)

I actually do like this bike, as I've learned to accept that in Cawl's grimdark designed future everything is as aerodynamic as a Walmart.

Looking forward to Subobden Khan!

The bike is confirmed as being entirely new tech, so I'm extremely hopeful that we get more of them.

The whole "jet bikes are rare" gimmick has long sailed. In Necromunda I can field random hive gang scum that zip around on jetbikes with Plasma weapons!

I would love to run units of these. I like the Outriders well enough, but not enough to invest in more of them. These on the other hand? I would buy many!

No, you're right... I was thinking of Kosarro Khan.

Weird though. I'm trying to think of another scenario with two named 'captains' on the table potentially in the same army.... Is that rare? Or am I missing something?

My friends are bugging me about the bike actually 'unseating Sammael as having the worst looking bike in the imperium'. lol

Huh, I think you're right. All I can remember are Chapter Master & Captain, or Captain & Something Else pairings. Even the Ultramarines are technically not doing two captains until Ferren Areios comes out.

Maybe I'm missing a specific restriction, but what about Imperial Fists having both Lysander and Garadon?

Dark Angels and Wolves have traditionally had multiple named captain-equivalents, but those are of course outside the standard codex.

And Sallies have two named characters with the CAPTAIN keyword, but that's more of a legacy designation for He'stan.

Similarly, Sicarius has the CAPTAIN keyword in the current codex, where he's listed alongside Ventris.

Still, Lysander and Garadon should qualify, but again maybe there's an additional constraint in your discussion that slipped by me.

Well long long ago I was making a DA army with Sammael and Belial because they each made their respective units TROOPS.

Its probably not unheard of to see Dorn and Garadon on the same board.

Its easy to make a list with Primarch + Chapter Master which isn't quite what you asked but still in the same vein.  Chapter Master + Captain is also common.  Heck its even fluffy to put Calgar and Sicarius onto the same tabletop.

The new White Scars Spearpoint does look better than I thought it would. I remember being so disappointed when they kind of ripped them apart after 8th/9th ed.

This looks really promising though. Stormswift onslaught: All Astartes eliglble to adv charge/fall back charge + Wrath of Khan (Suboden Khan 's unit) - after killing a unit can make a 6" move. (Including through walls/terrain.)

Great enhancements, and his personal rules are pretty decent. The strats are so good (not OP, but just really good utility) that I think you're going to be CP starved.

It's strictly an upgrade to be frank. I mostly like that the melee enhancement isn't restricted to Mounted anymore, which opens up Judiciar + Bladeguard fun, or the basic Captain + Assault Intercessors.

There's also the neato Enhancement granting Sustained + Ignores Cover, which is brilliant for the Gravis Captain and Aggressors. There's definitely more play with this detachment versus the Iron Hands one.

I think so too.

I kept thinking about that Sus1 enhancement and I think I'm going to put it on an LT or Apothecary either with or without Kosarro and put them with 10 Sternguard.

I love my Sternguard but honestly outside of my Ultramarines, I haven't found a lot of good use case scenarios for them. This might be a great fit.

I'm thinking bigger than Sternguard because they die too quick. I'm thinking an Aggressor deathstar. Their recent point cut and getting a constant free Mobile Lethality every turn with a Captain sounds extremely tasty. Throw the Eye on a Biologis and Spearpoint on the Captain and you're absolutely CRUSHING it. I'm less concerned about their survival because of the Reactive move they get access to, and I don't think the new biker dude needs it as much due to the absurd mobility of his squad to begin with.

I think a Biologist with "Hunter's Eye" leading a 10 man brick of Heavy Intercessors might actually be pretty dangerous.

That gives you 22 x S5 AP-1 Dmg 2 shots with Sustained, Lethal, and Ignores Cover, all with 30" range and the ability to advance and shoot (or even charge, if required).

Against a MEQ target, this squad averages about 6-7 dead Astartes bodies in a single shooting phaese, so very good for taking enemy small units off objectives. Even against vehicles or Monsters with T9 3+ saves, they do an average of 6 wounds (if you OoM the target, it goes up to an average of 10+ wounds on the vehicle).

Throw in the Heavy Intercessors extra durability on Objectives and I think you have a reasonably cost effective "Anvil" unit to anchor your line and also clear light-medium enemy units off Objectives with their own shooting.

It sounds nice, but my problem is it's not taking advantage of the main detachment's rules: they're easily one of the worst units in melee, and I'm unsure I'd want to use Mobile Lethality on them.

There is usually a point of saturation where it becomes better to take something off-brand to support what the detachment suggests as the primary strategy.

Like, forgefiends don't get any value out of the army rule or detachment rules in World Eaters, but they are still amazing.

Also, since Heavy Intercessors do have Assault weapons, they actually can still make use of the detachment rules to advance, shoot, and charge. That's usually the determinant for me if something will be decent for Scars - if they have melee gear or Assault guns they're worth a butcher's. Heavy Ints will obviously be somewhat liable to getting tagged up if used aggressively like that, but they'd be good as a combined cannon / home camper methinks.

Personally I'll probably put the ignores cover/Sus1 on my Lt in Hellblaster brick... Ap-3 Lethal/Sus1 ignores cover without any CP cost is just too good a cake not to eat.

Anyway - I'm stoked for Suboden to fully arrive... looks like a few weeks remain before he's out on his own, but will be worth the wait. I spent the last 3 weeks on my third stormspeeder, so nice to see them getting some love with a new strat in addition to the -1 hit and wound one.

Cheers,

The Good Doctor.

I will be trying the new detachment and Suboden tomorrow. I have no idea what I will be playing against, but I am keeping my list very basic for the test. I don't think I'll take more than 6 bikes in total. I'm still working on several lists, nothing is set in stone except my typical Khan + 6 Bladeguard.
