So Ive been frustrated with the supposed specific numbers of astartes (bullet caliber, projectile speed, strength, and weight). The lore numbers are pathetic and out-matched by weaponry that exists today. So Ive spent some time scaling certain numbers already in the lore into more powerful numbers and I thought you guys might be interested (this is going to be a long post).

First off the supposed caliber is pathetic, so I scaled it up to be bigger like they are in the videos/games to 50mm. Then to calculate how fast they could go I wanted to allow for the maximum recoil and force possible, so first I calculated the bolters as 6 foot long gauss rifles (gauss dramatically reduces recoil) about the size the heavy bolt rifle appears to be in space marine 2 if the space marine is 9 feet tall, and trust me, moving at mach 40 the ammunition will exit the barrel in ~0.0002667 seconds, thats just as much, if not more punch. It would be so fast it would leave a trail of water vapor obscuring vision 10-20% and would ignite the atmosphere into plasma for a brief 0.01–0.1 second period, keeping that badass flash as well. The flash would be ~196,300 candela bright, enough to nearly temporarily blind a normal person as close as holding the gun.

The recoil would be immense so I assumed the astartes is 9 ft tall with 20x muscle density and with genetic enhancements (neural efficiency, more fast-twitch fiber), and weighing 15,000 lbs without armor (20x muscle density is denser than lead) and a 9 foot tall statue made of lead with the muscular volume of an elite body builder would weigh ~15,302 lbs. The average man without training, at low body fat levels can lift their own body weight (deadlift), and an astartes would be about 25 times stronger for their weight, size, muscle density, neural force/efficiency, and greater fast-twitch fibers due to genetic engineering (bc fast-twitch fibers are significantly stronger than slow-twitch). The reason they arent stronger than that is bc 2x density only increases strength about 50%, but the astartes are way larger which contributes to strength a lot, in addition to the genetic enhancements so I guesstimated 25x. This would mean they could lift 25x their body weight, which would be 187.5 tons. Add the black carapace powered by a fusion reactor and I guesstimate they could lift ~250 tons (dont underestimate the massive strength enhancements' power).

For reference thats how much this Liebherr crane weighs that Im attaching a picture of, and remember this is a maximum capacity deadlift. Since the astartes can lift ~25x their body weight, assuming the armor will weigh about 10% their lifting capacity they should be able to remain quite dextrous. So I imagined weighted augments inside their power armor to further combat the recoil and at 10% lifting capacity this would make their power armor weigh 50,000 lbs + 15,000 lb body weight = 65,000 lbs (32.5 tons).

Now a 50mm bullet fired at mach 40 through a 6 foot barrel gauss rifle would have 23,136,000 lbs of force over ~0.0002667 seconds behind it, just hear me out before you say thats impossible and ridiculous. For reference the .50 BMG Rifle (

We're going to assume the tech of these augments are extremely advanced allowing the astartes to barely hold on to the ground. I asked grok if they would be strong enough to handle this recoil and it said considering their strength, weight, and super mag-locked boots with gyro-stabilizers it is plausible. Remember the force of friction would dwarf the weight if the marine's boots were designed with the greatest friction coefficient possible with advanced tech, on top of the super high powered, high tech magnets. This would equate to only the most powerful infantry weapons like sniper rifles, or maybe guns like the stalker bolt rifle.

For reference an experimental U.S. Navy railgun (tested 2010–2021), ~32 MJ muzzle energy. While the gauss rifle fired at maximum capacity like Ive been talking about would be 188 MJ. A tomahawk cruise missile is 1,882.8 MJ, but this weapon would be equipped to infantry and far more powerful by concentration (tomahawk cruise missile = 0.188 MJ/cm², mach 40 admantium (so it doesnt disintegrate) bullet = ~9.59 MJ/cm²). The flash of plasma from firing the astartes gun would have a white/blue color, and as a space marine you would still be able to see thanks to visual enhancements from genetics and the power armor.

I think these numbers are far more appropriate and actually reflect 10s of thousands of years of military advancements instead of being weaker than current day weaponry like the official lore suggests (pathetic). It also explains how they are able to damage foes like necrons. Finally they outclass 2025 weapons! (the reason the imperial guard can kind of compete in fire power, like at least an easily measurable fraction, is bc they use lasguns, which have no recoil)
